I have only tried three. I would say all of them are on the "econo" end of the price spectrum. I like all three, yet each has its own unique personality that creates enough difference to make it fun to own more than one of them. I feel certain that the higher-end Bay Rums also have interesting and defining qualities that give them individual identities as well.
Superior 70 - by far my favorite - very mild - pure bay leaf (pimento racemosa) scent - does not last long - perfect for a scent sensitive workplace.
Masters - another that is mostly characterized by the bay leaf scent - seems stronger-scented than Superior 70 - definitely lasts longer on me - the formulation I tried contained glycerin - maybe that made the scent hang around longer?
Pinaud VIBR - has a more pronounced clove & spice character - still a nice product - but is stronger and a little goes a long way - to me, the scent lasts longer than the Superior 70 or Masters - I like to use a very small amount of Pinuad VIBR with a bigger splash of Superior 70 for a nice balance of two Bay Rums with quite different characteristics.
Superior 70 is tough to find in a brick & mortar store. Pinaud and Masters are generally readily available at Barber Supply and Beauty Supply stores.
Captain's Choice and Krampert's and Meehan's, for different reasons. If you include balms, Gilbert Henry and (discontinued) Burt's Bees fight it out for the 3 spot.
There are honorable mentions, or others may be top if you like the "flavored" varieties. I like The Shave Den's signature splash a lot (Bay Rum and Bergamot) and the Ogallala Lime and Peppercorns, too.
Captain's Choice has no cloves, btw. Other spices might be "too much clove"...? It's the least clovey of the good ones.
Since we're on the frag forum... I have not found a Bay Rum EDT or cologne that I like, unless you count Meehan's (which I find disappears very quickly).
Captain's Choice - virtually perfect, just a bit pricey
Dominica - huge value
Apotheca Solis - good skin care, lasting scent, but I don't think it exists anymore (slight problem... haha)
I actually added Dominica to the 1/2 bottle of Apotheca Solis that I had left, and it's great stuff. Now that I think about it, my mix is getting a bit low. I think I'm going to add more Dominica to stretch the Apotheca Solis even further.
