Bay Rum and Lime, Handmade Shaving Soap

Gents,

Has anyone ever tried the Bay Rum & Lime Handmade Shaving Soap from Joshua Tree Soapworks? They are on Ebay, and made with natural oils and goats milk.

Thanks in advance for any advice:biggrin1:

"My soap is comprised of saponified vegetable oils, never any animal products, Dyes or preservatives. Moisturizing Olive oil is the main oil used, Palm, Palm Kernel and Coconut oils are also used to provide a rich lather and a long lasting bar of soap. Coco Butter is added to Super Fat the soap making it an exceptionally gentle bar of soap. I now add honey to my soap to give you extra thick lather and to acts as a natural preservative."

Wait, "never any animal products", but it's made with GOAT'S milk and honey? Not to get all ranty, but goats and bees aren't vegetables. (Protip - proofread when cutting and pasting.)

Olive oil is usually recommended against for shaving soap, as it tends to make the lather too thin and foamy (although it makes for a great moisturizing bath bar, and some soapmakers have been able to make a solid shaving soap out of it). It looks more like a bath bar that's been repurposed than a soap that's been designed as a shaving soap.

Also, check out this thread - http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/311516-Anybody-tried-this-handmade-Bay-Rum-and-Lime-soap

I would probably steer clear, but for $4.50 a bar, it might be worth trying out and then using as a nice bay rum and lime bath bar if it doesn't work.

JBLA,

Thank you for the input. I didn't catch the deal about the goats milk either. I am going to give it a whirl, and when I get around to using it (still have plenty of soap in my mug) I will post my findings.

If you want a great Bay Rum soap, you should try Mystic Water Bay Rum; best Bay Rum out there and very intoxicating! Excellent soap.

Tried it. Wasn't impressed. Difficult to lather (well, more so than anything else I use). Could have just been me, I guess; but I did think it made a good bath soap.

I am sad to report, that the soap did not lather well at all. It did initially, however once it was on my face for a few seconds it fizzled out, and became watery. The soap will be used for a shower bar. Oh well, "you pay's your money you takes your chances"

I have had good success with the Bay Rum soap made by the etsy vendor Mundus. Jennifer makes both a puck, and a container of soap. The container is best.

I ordered it because it advertised that it lathered well in cold water. I haven't used it yet. One thing you can try to get it to respond is to grate it with a cheese grater. That has enabled me to get some life in a couple of soaps that didn't lather well.
