What's new

bay rhum (rum)

I'm looking for a good bay rhum (rum). I want an old school bay rum not bay rum and (insert other sent here) i have one of those.

I've tried bunches an have not liked many. As a matter of fact I had written them off until just recently.

Everyone should at least try Dominica. See the review section. Old school. Wow, it's loaded with alcohol though. You have not felt burn until you make a four pass feather shave and then splash this on. I am quite certain I saw stars. I'm serious. I almost fainted. But, it's fleeting.:thumbup1:

St. Johns is worth a try also. Get samples if you can. Barclay offers a bay rum sampler of almost every kind made. Might want to go for that. http://barclaycrocker.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=barclay&Product_Code=SampleBay&Category_Code=

My favorite far and away is DR Harris Bay Rum. This one brought me back to Bay Rums because frankly SOME bay rums get skanky and say dirty old man. (I did not say Pinuad) And ... SWMBO loves the Harris... that was a plus. My wife hardly ever comments on the crazy stuff I wear, but this one got unsolicited rave reviews.

One more thing. Apparently, getting the right Bay Rum leaf variety is a big deal as far as skin care goes.

I have tried quite a few as well. I don't think you will be interested in the Pinaud as it has a heavy clove scent in it. I still enjoy it but probably not what you are after here. The best one I have come across is pretty cheap; it is called Benjamin's Bay Rum (from Jamaica). Real bay rum, not other stuff mixed in. Has pretty good staying power too compared to others. I also picked up a bottle of mentholated for the hot days in summer :thumbup1: (which sadly are gone already! :thumbdown) Superior70 had the weakest scent out of any I tried. The other Bay Rums from the islands are enjoyable as well.

I also suggest Dominica (has a Lime version - not a lot of lime to my sniffer);

Royall is very good as well.

I'm going to try to find Benjamin's (with menthol, too? - woh!) - is it readily available?

I think Pinaud Clubman's is the classic old school bay rum. I use it, and like it. Doesn't moisturize much, but knocks out any razor burn or irritation that occasionally arises in a heartbeat. To my nose, there's a bit of a musky bottom note that really tames the spiciness/cloviness of the splash. Good luck!

Yep! I got mine from Shoebox Shaveshop but I think he is out of stock right now. If you do a google search there are others that sell it online. If you have any Caribbean or Jamaican markets near you they should carry it as well.

You can't go wrong picking up a bottle of Master's Bay Rum at Sally's. Big bottle, great scent, cheap as dirt. Don't be put off by the smell out of the bottle. Much better scent on the skin after shaving.

My favorite is actually a mix of the Pinaud and the Master's 50/50 as I don't appreciate the extreme cloviness of the Pinaud straight most days. It also alleviates the burn of the Pinaud product.

Master's is pretty tame by it self, but it is very soothing for some reason to my face. You can't beat it on price hardly, and it is available locally in most Sally's Beauty Supply stores.

Ogallala is a nice product as well. I have a small sample of the Bay Rum, Lime, and Peppercorn AS and it smells very nice, and has some goodies for your face. SWMBO also gives this a thumbs up when I wear it.

What a great topic for my first post!

Stephan's has yet to be mentioned. Since it is Ph balanced (the main ingredient is water) there is virtually no sting to it. The scent lasts a nice long time.

I am always surprised to see the Pinaud Bay Rum get such high reviews. That stuff to me smells like cinamon with Bay Rum as an after thought. Not to mention going on it feels like someone just took a flame thrower to your face.

The Ogalala product is nice. But like the Pinaud, Bay Rum is a secondary scent. With Ogalala you get Witch Hazel first and then Bay Rum. I"m not saying either Pinaud or Ogalala are bad, just variations on a theme - Bay Rum.

IMHO if you want Bay Rum try the Dominica or the Stephan's.

Disclaimer: I have not tried Meehan's or Royall so I cannot comment on those.
