Barber time with my boy

My son is 3 and a half years old, and I've been taking him to my barber since he was 2 or 2 and a half. The first few haircuts we went to Snippets, a chain with videos and toys and such, and he still cried (and didn't get a good haircut). I got fed up and took him to my guy, who believes in training him little by little to get groomed. He cried there the first few times as well, but it gradually got better. Today we went and for the first time, he laughed :001_cool:

I've come to realize how neat it is to have this "man time" with my son. My barber is a true old-school gentleman's gentleman type, and he comments on what a nice memory this will be for him. I never had anything like that with my dad, so I'm glad to be able to give it to my son. Oh, and he looks mighty sharp, too - my barber is a wizard with scissors. He does straight shaves too, I just haven't gotten around to it...

When I was young, I remember my father used to take me to a barber who was a wizard with a Straight and Scissors. I remember how uncomfortable it was to sit on that wooden plank the barber used to put on the chair handles so I could be high enough. The barber used to tell me to sit still or get my ears chopped off. Boy, those were the days. Maximum heat, itching, and a sharp straight in one hand and scissors in the other. I learned a lot of discipline sitting still itching and hot. I really believed he would cut my ear off. But this guy was a professional. He always took a wad of chewing tobacco before doing a haircut and had a great big spittoon on the side. I think its great that you are doing something for your son that you didn't get to do with your father.

Great story. It'll be nice to have something you share with your son like this. I have two daughters and, as long as I was cutting their hair, it was a fun time for us. Kind of moved off into the girl zone when they started going places to get it cut. They still talk fondly about the notches I cut into their ears.

awesome story!

I really need to go find an awesome old school barber to go to.

I never went anywhere like this with my dad, or ever really. I need to find a good place so that I can, and one day when I have kids it'll be great memories.

Our tradition started when my boy was not much older than yours. At the time I was 1YoungGI and still had enough hair to visit the base barbershop and him, he still needed to sit on one of those plastic things. He proudly supported his "daddy style" high and tight. When I retired and moved back home, priority one was find a good barbershop. And we were quite successful. I could not have been more impressed when after his first haircut, the barber began stroping a straight razor to shave his neck and around his ears. Now there's a gentleman's gentleman. My son is 18 and refuses to have his hair cut anywhere but a man's barbershop. We've had some good memories him and I in a barber shop. During the Kosovo War, I was deployed for 6 months or so. I came home to him with the shaggiest hair ever. When I casually flipped him some crap about it he just smiled and said, "I couldn't go to the barbershop without you, dude." We went the following morning.

Now that is great story! Thank you for sharing. I had to read that to my wife.

I love taking my son to the barber. We use the same barber as my dad. This guy has cut three generations of hair. His barber shop is really neat. It is full of antiques, deer antlers, and rattlesnake rattles hanging from the walls.

hey bat, where abouts is your barber? next time I'm in town maybe I will stop buy. i know a good barber in melrose, called Eriks barber shop located on the corner of franklin and main. I also know a good one in Malden called Dominiks on main street. Although Dom and erik are arch enemies, I still patronize the both of them.
