Barbasol two piece DE

I found one of these at the local antique mall today. The razor was pretty clean, but the case had seen better days. I really wanted to pick it up, but the gentleman wouldn't budge from 50 dollars. I'm not sure if it was the floating blade model or not. I hear they are a pretty aggressive razor, so I plan to give it a week or so and make him another offer. This place is a gold mine for old brushes, sadly I don't know enough about them to make a smart purchase. I did pass on a dirty fatboy for 7 dollars, though.

$50 if it is the floating head model and in pretty good condition I would think is fair but you can get one on ebay for about that. The floating head model has barbasol written around the base near the twist knob, the non-floating head is unlabeled if that helps out. They are aggressive but nothing compared to the R41. Nice heft.

I agree Alex but the shave I think is a step up on the aggression scale with the R41, don't you. They are both aggressive no doubt and I do have to wonder if the R41 was somewhat designed after the Barbasol.

Yes, Muele has done a great job the r41, its a bit more aggressive, but my Barbaol is right behind, followed by my 'streamline.

The plating on the razor is in fine shape. It caught my eye, hidden on a shelf because of how shiny it was. Is there an issue with relating these razors?

I am sort of confused about this one, so an ID would help. I know it is an aggressive and good shaver, but I cannot really tell which version it is. So, here are some close up pictures.

Richard, I don't know the answer, but on your close-up pictures, it looks like the "tooth-comb" is significantly bent on one side, and maybe a bit bent on the other. Have you tried to straighten it out?

Look at the base near the twist knob if it says Barbasol around it its the floating head. By the way it does look like the floating head based on you head pics.

Thanks. I fixed the bent safety bar. I did not really notice it until I saw the close up pictures.

The razor does not say Barbasol, but does look like the floating head. That is why I posted the pictures.

Nice pictures, Richard. i am getting a floating head one as i just picked one up on the BST and am looking forward to trying it out.

Richard, I believe that is the floating head version that you have there. The part on the underside of the head is cylindrical. I believe the non-floating head version has a part that is square-like.

Cutting_edge has some excellent pictures here showing the difference between the two. If you really wanted to be certain, just put a razor blade in it and take pictures. With the floating head version, the blade does not touch the safety bar.

Thanks. The blade does not touch the safety bar when installed. Where the bottom plate attaches to the handle it is round. And, it does not say Barbasol along the base. So, I suppose it is a floating head one, that just does not have the name written on it.

Surely looks like one and sounds like one. I know there were a few made that did not say Barbasol at the base. It typically is the easiest way to ID a floating head but the absence of the branding does not rule it out.
