Balms Vs. Splashes

Which is better for oily skin? Balms or Splashes?

Is it possible that using a balm aftershave causes ongoing irritation or redness for oily skinned people and that splashes combat redness, bumps, and irritation better for people who have oily skin?

I have oily skin and I use T&H 1805 ASB after every shave...I wet my hand moderately then pump once and rub my hands together forming a nice soft mix of water and balm and apply that after every shave...my face absorbs it nicely and my face is no more oily than it would be if I didn't use it...my face actually punishes me if I go more than 3 days without shaving twice...(i.e. I shave on day 1, then on day 4, then on day 7...by day 9 I have at least two terrible pimples that take 5 days to get rid of [yet another benefit of taking care of your face, at least in this case, my face] but if I shave every day or every other day, then my face appreciates it and rewards me with good looking skin, no blemishes and less oil production it seems...)

for the record, I have never used a splash in conjuction with wetshaving of any kind, cartridge or DE...

I used to use alcohol-based acne medication, and I believe the alcohol dried out my face worse than the meds did. A lot of men do well with the alcohol splashes but I've stayed away from them because of my prior poor experience.

They both can work but it depends on how much and what kind. The general "consensus" seems to be more toward using spalshes for oily skin, balms for dry skin, and folks with normal or combination skin can play around in the middle somewhere. I don't think you have to use a splash if you have oily skin, I would just use a more milky balm rather than a greasy one and I would use much.

Personally, I have normal skin and use both depending on the weather, time of year, and how my shave went.

There are also great splashes that don't contain alcohol like Provence Sante Green Tea and some splashes that do contain alcohol but are very moisturizing like the new "uncorked" Musgo Real.

Actually, I like to use both. A little splash, preferably mentholated, to cool things off followed by a balm to seal and moisturize. Works well for me.

+1 I like Musgo Real splash followed by Castle Forbes Lime balm which absorbs really well and neither leaves the skin feeling greasy or oily.
