Bad shaves - when do you know?

Sometimes it takes me well into the morning to realise the shave wasn't as good as I thought it was. How long does it take you to think 'mmm...that wasn't a good one'?

I guess that depends on how you define "good", and "bad". Still being a relative newbie (I am about 2+ months in) I count a "good" shave as one in which I didn't nick the living daylights out of my face, and didn't miss any patches of stubble.:lol:

No pun intended but ....... how long it takes to realize that it wasn't a good one', happens very much like with wives / girl friends, IMO it depends on how ready and awaken you are to notice some thing is wrong: some times you do it on the fly and others it may take a bit longer. :001_rolle

Good shave=no blood or irritation or super intense alcohol burn.

badshave, i nearly sever a digit, mess up my goated, and take off the top layer of skin.

If it's bad, I usually get a gut feeling near the end of the 2nd pass, and know for sure by the third. More effort and more discomfort are the tell-tale.

It's a bad shave when my face is beet red and I need a half hour to recover. This usually happens with products that irritate my skin.

If it's not going to be a "good shave" I know it during the shave.

I can usually sense during the shave that it's not going to be DFS. It is usually during my cold water rinse that I know it it was not a great shave. I rarely get nicks or weepers anymore, so a bad shave for me is anything other than a good shave, if that makes sense. If I can feel stubble when I rub my hand over my face with the grain, it wasn't a great shave. The problem usually occurs at my jawline near my ears, or immediately under my nose.

I don't get bad shaves any longer, but on a scale of 4, an individual shave may be between 3+ and 4. I usually know during touch-up. If I get tired of shaving, or run out of time before I'm really done, it's going to be a 3+. However, once in a while I'll be surprised a few hours later. Yesterday, for example, I shaved with what I thought was a less-than-sharp Bengall straight. Was surprised to get a good shave, a marginal 3+. A few hours later, while faceturbating, I determined it was much closer that I first thought. This happens once in a while. I think that after your face has relaxed for a while, the landscape changes a bit.

What I had in mind was, you're at your desk or you're in your cab, else on the line, you rub your chin with the back of your hand, mid-morning, and you think to yourself 'damn I missed that bit', the bit under your bottom lip or the neck line. It felt good at 7 am - why didn't I spot the missed bit? Must do better tomorrow.

+1

I usually notice this after applying my splash and witch hazel, and so have to go back to the razor after I am "finished". It's really annoying, and its gross to feel that roughness under my chin when I am supposed to have the shave done and over with.

More care is needed I suppose.

As far as a bad shave in terms of missing spots about 5 minutes after my cold water rinse b/c thats about how long it take for my hair to fully retract back into my skin. Or about 4-5 hours later when the hair on the uneven shave spots start to come in.
