Bad idea to put fragrance in stainless steel bottles?

Hello all!

I have two stainless steel bottles that I want to transfer some aftershave and cologne to after an unfortunate transportation incident.

Is putting either of these in a stainless steel bottle a good idea for traveling? Will it affect the scent? Will it affect the bottles?

Opinions/information would be helpful.

Stainless steel doesn't have any coating or chemical that leeches, that's why it's ideal for water bottles.

Glass is the best choice. Stainless is just that, it stains less than a carbon steel. It will react with the contents over a period of time. The contents would be at risk of contamination from the container. You could end up with a metallic scent compared to what you first put in the steel container. You would be hard pressed to find a manufacturer that packages good quality after shaves, colognes, or perfumes in a metallic container unless it was lined or plated with a non reactive substance. All depends on how fussy you are.

I highly recommend getting a "Flo Refillable Perfume Atomizer". (right now its $12 amazon prime) Perfect for travel and for testing out sample vials too. They're not too expensive and pretty simple to use. I've tossed it into my carry on bag a bunch of times and its pretty durable. plus if anything does happen, you dont lose a whole lot.

Still trying to figure out a good way to clean it out to change scents though.

In case this information helps, Montale sells its scents in aluminum cannisters, or at least sure did the last time I bought any. I do not recall that those containers are lined in any way. Montale seems to know what it is doing when it comes to scents. I do not know whether stainless steel would be different than aluminum for scents. I might have guessed that aluminum would be more problematic, if anything were problematic.

I like the idea of metal because it blocks light. But I really know nothing about this area of inquiry!

I really don't know the answer to this. The Knize is right about Montale although as far as I know they are the only ones using aluminum (and NOT stainless steel). 99.99% of the market is using glass and I think that is testament to something since glass is completely non-reactive. It really probably all boils down to the chemical make-up of the fragrance. FYI, some companies actually use plastic (Comme des Garcon's Synthetic Series, for example), so I get the statistic - which I fabricated - is more like 99.98%.

Reminds me of my Material Selection for Design professor in undergrad, he always made a humorous point that the "stainless" in stainless steel should be two words. He goes "it STAINS LESS, if it was stainproof, they would call it that!"
