Backyard chickens

Planning on getting some. Live in woodsy suburbs, and have raccoons living all around. Am certain I can keep them out of yet to be built coop, but will they spook hens and stop their egg laying?

Here are 30 cornish cross meat birds, they are 3 weeks into the 8 weeks it takes to raise them.

not that i'm aware of. When I lived in the "country" we had hens. coyote running through the yard didn't even stop them. had lots of eggs.

If I didn't live in the city i'd have some hens.

Had 6 of them. 2 were 'taken.' 1 by a coyote and 1 by a bobcat. My daughter is asking to get 2 more to replace the fallen hens.
They are easy to take care of, and produce an abundance of delicious eggs.

Not yet... My wife wants some. I'm not at all sold on the idea... not that that mattered when she wanted a dog... :a52:
Reminds me of when a neighbor, a physician got some, then thought his basset hounds wanted to "play" with the chickens. Had a few good laughs over that one. Folks that live there now have some chickens and one or two are like pets. I was outside my house, across the street and looked down and one was following me around.

I live in a residential area that is bordered by a park, a few years ago the city decided to put a paved path in the back of the park that butts up agaist the residential area. It changed everything for the people that live there as they were almost living on 5 acre lots and could do what they wanted as they extended their property into the park. The path cut into their back yards where the real property line is and now they have people on the path behind their homes at all hours.

It is a great place to jog as it has several different inclines and is very rolling. One morning as I was jogging, I heard a rooster crow and as I looked up, I saw a small coup and 8 or so chickens along with the rooster. I often wonder what those neighbors think when they hear that rooster crow in the morning. Another neighbor has a house up for sale in an area that are 1 acre lots. They have tried to sell and can't due to the fact that their neighbor keeps bees and chickens. I can't believe the zoning inspector doesn't do something as it is against the zoning.

3 of the largest cities around me allow backyard chickens, mine does not so long as chickens are considered "farm animals".

Naperville, IL allows backyard chickens! I can't believe they do but Aurora, IL doesn't. If anyone knows Naperville, IL you'll understand my disbelief.

Chickens and goats are allowed in the city here. We have one neighbor (not very close) who has chicken, goats AND bees buzzzzzzz

I'd love to have them but my wife is dead set against the idea. It's no wonder as she grew up with every barn yard animal you could name. She's done, finished with "them nasty birds". Lol.

Chickens are not allowed here anymore, but somehow, its OK for my neighbor to have 6 or so barking dogs that act like they would tear you apart if they got loose.
