A little poofier than I prefer
Hey there B&B bikers! Spring is in the air here in Virginia. We’ve had the longest stretch without rain or snow in quite a while, so I was determined to go mountain biking today after work while the trails are dry. I loaded up the bike and packed my riding clothes into the gym bag last night. When I got to work, I realized I left my bag at home. Ugg, getting old sucks! But was lack of optimal clothes going to stop me from shredding the gnar? Oh, H E double-hockey sticks - no! It helped I wore cords and desert boots to work instead of fancier clothes. I untucked my shirt and hit the dirt as planned, trying to avoid doing anything crazy enough to split the crotch seam or blow out a knee. If the city bike commuters can ride in business casual, so can I! It was a really nice ride. Only a few miles, but felt great to be out on the bike again.

I rotated the Gator Hardshells last night and got on the road tonight. Tires are wearing great. Couple of small, ground glass nicks. Sidewalls are holding up well. I must have about 2K miles on them. Should easily double that.

While many folks head to the beach on a Florida Saturday, I like to head inland to the MTB park. There is still plenty of Florida that hasn’t been paved! Even the gopher tortoises prefer the single track to the Guinea grass. The younger guys were in the pump track area working on jumps. Trying to get some rides in before the rains close the park.

Setting record high temperatures in Portland, so I had to check it out on a bike. Soaked my shirt and a neck cloth for extra cooling, then totaled about 15 miles.

Temps ranged from 100ish before 11, up to the full 115 degrees in the afternoon. The wind came up too, so I imagined it as riding thru a convection oven. Eight miles at a very conservative pace was more than enough in the oven. Those extra 15 degrees made a huge difference.

Quiet around here. Both 2019 and 2020 were difficult years for me to get saddle time.

Yesterday I put in a pretty flat 30 miler. Today I added 15 miles and a couple climbs. I'm getting my groove back (I hope).

At the top of today's second climb (Mount Tabor) I had my first opportunity to see the new 'bronze' head of York, known for his role in the Lewis and Clark expedition.

York has replaced a statue of Harvey Scott, which did not survive in the iconclastic Portland protests of recent memory.

Just discovered this thread and what do I see? York. More specific on Mt. Tabor one of my favorite race courses in the 80's. Won several races Cat 3 as well as Masters 35+ at the time.
Today I did 90mi in the heat with 5100' el gain. Was a great ride till I hit the chip seal.

just saw this :)

used to own a bike shop in the 80s big roady and some mtn back then now mtn more since roads are crazy where I live :)

I like the monument, but the write up is plainly untrue. Clark did eventually free York. During the expedition, Clark trusted York to operate independently, hence his role negotiating with the Native American tribes, and he even voted as an equal with the rest of the Corps. By all accounts, Clark and York were genuinely good friends, albeit within the social strictures of their time. I'm glad that they put up the monument, but the calumny against William Clark is unnecessary.

Time to do my research!

The combination of heat and humidity was a little brutal today. I got a late start and by the time I finished the feels like temperature was 106°. I could see isolated rain showers, but I never got the cool down. I would not have made it home without a stop at the fruit stand! They make a killer mango smoothie. 50 miles today.

I don't know why all the roads I do have been chip sealed this past month? Did 84mi North of our residence and once out that far and I see chip seal it really makes me wonder about my choices. But, I loved the tail wind coming home!!!

I don't want to comment on how long it has been since I made it out. I chose a doozy of a day to hop back on. Phone says it felt like 97-100 ° . Did a fairly slow 15 miles, but was dumping sweat from the heat. Loved every minute of it, glad to get back out finally.
