auction question (looking at buying)

there is an auction that i'm looking at that has what appears to be very good condition gold plated aristocrats, and i wanted to know what i should set myself limit wise if i was going to buy it.

this person has some straights for auction too, but they appear to be very worn and not really shave quality.

nice 5/8 boker
UPS blade bank
few brushes

but the 2 gold aristocrats was the one that caught my eye

This is a YMMV kinda thing. I personally never go over $20 for any auction, because 1 time I got in a bidding war. And my arrogance got the best of me....Needless to say, I paid like $50 bucks for a user grade red tip. I'd say, set a limit you feel comfortable with, and stick with it. If you have to watch them soar out of your price, then that's the breaks I guess. Buyers set the prices, not the sellers... Good luck!!!

There really isn't an answer to this question.
If the auction site has the ability to list completed auctions, have a look at those for actual selling prices.
Otherwise, the price you are willing to pay is whatever you decide.

If you are collecting then the sky is the limit but how much something is worth is only related to how much you are willing to pay for it and in collecting there is no limit.

If you are going to shave with it, I'm like the others...I rarely pay more than $20.

As long as what you are interested in it's too rare, then just look at the lowest that they ever go for and try to get one close to that. Just walk away each time the bidding goes before what you are comfortable with.

Auctions are going on 24/7 so you never have to wait long for another one. Sometimes I'll pay just a little more if I'm in a hurry and don't want to keep looking. I won't pay a lot more however.

Looking for straight razors requires a little more knowledge and skill in knowing how to repair them and when it's not worth it to do so.

I just bought, at auction, today a Gillette Slim user grade for $24 shipped. There were plenty for a lot more than that. I start by looking for a short handled Black Beauty and they were currently too expensive so I went with the Slim which is adjustable and has a short handle.

It pays to be flexible.

If a razor is worth x amount but you dont want to spend more than y, then place your highest bid and just leave it. :) that way you don't get carried away.

I don't understand why people bid up items on eBay. If I want something, I just get the item number and set a sniper to hit it. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose....but I don't bid just so someone else can come behind me to out bid me. It drives the price up over what I'm willing to pay.

this is a estate sale btw.

i think i forgot to mention that!

i just was wondering what others would pay to give me an idea, the auction place is about a hour away from me.

Guys, I've been seeing lots of threads about estimates and appraisals lately. Remember that we discourage talk about pricing gear. It's OK to give somebody a tip about how to avoid getting taken for a ride on a razor or a brush, but let's not get too deep into the sales talk. Sometimes people cruise in fron eBay to mine our expertise so that they can make more money on their gear, and other people use the informational post to run sales via PM out of the BST. That doesn't mean that every post has to be about technique, but let's keep the balance.
