Atoma...DMT?

Been reading a lot about these two sharpening media. I interpret so far they are essentially the same thing, different manufacturers...different prices. Yes?

Atomas have a replaceable sheet and tend to typically last longer (from what I've been told). They are not a continuous surface like the DMTs so they don't stick as much to stones when lapping.

In the end they are very similar to each other, you can always get the smaller slurry Atoma from CKTG or a credit card DMT if you just want to try them out.

Atoma for lapping. Dmts for steel. You can lap.with a 325 DMT. And you can use an atoma 1200 to set a bevel. But I would use the atoma for lapping and the dmts for steel work. Having said that I'm sure many people have done many different things with each. Lol.

I got the atoma 400 for lapping because I didn't like the way the dmt sticks.

For bevel setting I use 1200 sandpaper

And when I eventually buy a jnat, I'll also buy an atoma 1200 for slurry creation.

But I just bought a Filarmonica and a convex combo Ark, so the hobby budget is blown for a while.
