I think it is something you work your way into. I do it normally now but I do recall decades ago when I first tried it and then slapped the aftershave on . . . "FIRE" . . . it was smooth . . . for my hot date . . .and the fire was not even a consideration in her presence.

Generally folks new at this are warned against shaving ATG because of a concern that lack of technique will result in irritation and bad shaves.

As skill develops, most folks work it out on their own when they have the skills necessary to shave ATG.

The bottom line is, if you can do it without pain or irritation, it's fine.

Some people, due to skin issues, are never able to do it. It's a personal thing.

Good luck with figuring your own position out!

i've been doing 3 passes
wtg, atg, and then xtg.
In reality the xtg doesn't do much.
Doesnt seem to irritate me much tho.

For me the only efficient cuts are WTG and ATG. ATG is more aggressive than XTG, of course, but it actually cuts hair whereas XTG is only slightly less irritating and results in practicially nothing. 2 XTG passes would be as irritating but still less smooth than a single ATG.

I have received advice from one barber who said that I should never shave ATG. He told me that if I live with the stubble long enough my beard would adapt and I would be able to get a clean shave WTG. I tried and it started to work but never got as clean of a shave as with ATG.

Now I do one pass WTG, one pass ATG, one pass XTG, then random touch ups, Hooks, gillette slides, and occasionally blade buffing to finish.

To prep, I put on hot water, then shave oil, then nutragena glycerin shave cream, then I floss and brush while it soaks. I partially rinse with hot water (as the nutragena is hard to rinse off), then I put on a coat of shaving cream, and the whiskers just melt off like hot butter.

I also shave pre-shower so I never have blood. That way I don't have to rub my bleeding face with an Aldzheimer's causing Alum block.

I tried ATG after about my second week of DE shaving and found it uncomfortable. However, when I skipped it and just did one WTG and two XTG (in opposite directions) I got pretty good shaves. As my technique improved these progressed to DFS  since then I've never bothered going back to trying ATG apart from a few small patches, like under my nose. This works for me, but ymmv

ATG shaving is not for everybody and depends more on your skin type than anything else. I personally shave ATG everyday with a well honed/stropped straight razor and have little to no irritation. Technique is everything when shaving ATG, and you must be patient and take your time. I do remember having a terrible time with shaving irritation back when I didn't know any better and was using mulit-blade razors. Those things killed my neck and left it red an inflamed. Now with a keen edge on my straight I can shave comfortable WTG/ATG/XTG.
