Arkie Edge

Thanks to Wid, I got to try out an Arkie edge on this beautiful razor

Just had a shave with Mr. Jung.

First very nice razor. Thanks Wid again for sending it my way.

Good shave. The razor was very sharp, no tugging or pulling. I normally do 3 passes. WTG, XTG x 2. No problems at all. The keenness falls in the vicinity of the JNATs and feels sharper than the coticule edge.

Smoothness falls below the JNAT edges and coticule edges, although not by much.

Overall had a nice shave, no cuts weepers irritation. Minimal burn with AS (used Proraso for a real test)

The razor may eventually be returned to him (J/K) with a JNAT edge for him to try out. I look forward to his review of the JNAT.

Thanks again Wid.

Thanks for the feedback Doc. Your findings are very similar to mine.

No real hurry for the razor, keep it for spell if ya want.

Forgot to add, that was a fresh edge with no shaves on it. It very well might calm down with another shave or two on it.

You might have something there, OK, OK you talked me into it, I'll keep it for a few shaves.

If I had a Black Arkie when I started honing razors I can't say for certain but I don't think I would have spent all the money on coticules I have.

I think modern coti's are just as good as vintage, but I don't feel the same is true for the high end arks. And it's pretty apparent the bar for "hard arkansas" has been lowered, since you find very few vintage arkansas sold as "hard arkansas" that aren't trans or incredibly smooth blacks.

Thanks, just what I have been reading myself.
But a newly mined translucent should still be good enough as a finisher then, right?

Yeah, the finish off my modern translucents were definitely good to shave with. I did slightly prefer my vintage trans, I prefer vintage black arks to those. I use my vintage trans just because it's 6" and my biggest vintage black ark was only like 3x2". I WANT to try one of the really old trans (the really yellowed ones you usually find as watchmaker or jeweler hones) but I haven't snagged one yet.

No.

....

Well maybe if you put synthetic abrasive or Jnat slurry on top of it or something... but the arks natural cutting action isn't as fine as Jnats are capable of.

Like this Ian? 5x1x3/8 approx. It is whiter on the face because I have just lapped it. Oh what a bugger even on such a little stone. I assume the yellow is from rust leaching in over the years.
