I like using Norton honing oil which is a thin white mineral oil so there is no smell whatsoever and cleans up quickly with soap and water, or simple green and a quick rinse, which I usually use because i keep some handy in a small spray bottle.Thx u,, how do u keep her clean, if using wd or other oils?

Your welcome!
When using oil it only takes about 4 drops on an 8” stone. Any more won’t help and is just a waste of oil and cleaning products.
Yes it is. I like the viscosity, lack of odor, and ease of clean up.Is nortons your preferred method, thx as was way wondering how much to use

4 drops give or take is you need.
The small can with a spout will last many years.

Picked up this NOS Pike hard ark in box - the label was so old, I used my hairdryer and a razor blade, but no matter how slow I went it chipped away :/
That was a bummer but that aside, a bath in Simple Green and it came out looking like a butterscotch beauty.
I haven’t used many arks before, but any basic honing medium suggestions? I don’t want to use full oil on it, but I have some vegetable glycerin
Glycerin works just fine and you can thin it out with a few drops of water to get the consistency you like.Picked up this NOS Pike hard ark in box - the label was so old, I used my hairdryer and a razor blade, but no matter how slow I went it chipped away :/

Been a long time since I played around with my arks, finally got round to lapping this today, a Norton HB-8 with a big pink patch which looks great.
A super hard and fine trans.View attachment 1295232View attachment 1295233
Very nice! Congrats! Now if you only had a wood lathe to make a new handle for that chisel………My first wild find and my first trans. I’d appreciate if anyone could shed some light on the age. The stone came in a very nice wood box. It sits snug in the box but appears to have never been glued. Not sure if the box is an aftermarket addition. Both sides seem to be lapped and I get fairly strong stiction to my granite surface plate from the top. It looks like this little 6x2x0.75” chunk of novaculite may have some potential. SG is almost identical to my black ark from Dan’s.
The seller threw in an old vintage chisel made of Sheffield steel. The handle is shot but the blade looks alright. This will definitely be a burnishing upgrade from my kitchen knives.
