Arkansas Love...Let's see those Arks!

Have not been hunting much this summer but did get lucky and snag a Ark. A vintage Smiths 8” Hard Ark with a Milky Way, Starscape appearance to the surface. SWMBO called it a calico stone. Came in original box with a paper insert explaining Arks

Is that a semi translucent?
It sure looks like it. I'm a big fan of those Smith's.
Should you ever need to whittle down your collection give me a yell.

Is that a semi translucent?

It’s not as pure as my antique Pike and Norton Translucents but it will punch in its weight class

What’s with the triangle box? I’ve got a bunch of those me thinks.

Ah go on then, let's see some pics...

Nothing special about them really; I just like the branding so trying to collect one of each type, excluding all the billions of types of BHs they made. Originally the No.1 and QC didn't come in the harder triangle boxes, so this was the lineup in 1935 (though obviously the green and yellow label is a bit later).

There's also the Quickcut, but the thing I'm really missing there is the Fastcut. And I'd also quite like to get one of these, which I didn't know existed until recently... there seems to have been a period after they got rid of the LW/No.1 distinction, but before they moved to the later style boxes:

I've got one of those. It's NOS with both side labels and a little pamphlet where you can redeem your very own Barney doll. Oil nor steel have ever touched this stone, and it's only been handled by virgin monks.

Very cool! My LW above is NOS (Australian FB Market of all places), though I think predates the birth of Barney the Behr-Manning Bear. Instead I can send off for a number of seminal educational works such as: Sandpaper Its How and Its Why

Yours reminded me of this children's classic that I saw on ebay earlier this year... A lighthearted read for much of its 16 pages as Barney and the cubs get up to all sorts of abrasive fun, before things take a darker turn toward the end in the now infamous Turkey murdering chapter...

And last, a NOS Hard Ark still in its original wrapping with two pamphlets. I did take a peak at this one and it’s a lovely black, and some cool Norton catalogs. View attachment 1512038View attachment 1512039View attachment 1512040

Oh you've got the same 5x2 NOS Lily White as I do. The pamphlets are cool too.

Seems pretty rare to have a black in that era box...? I think I've only seen pics of one other before. Amazing find :).

My 8x2 Coarse and Fine Crystolon above is also unused. But that's not quite as exciting!

Google translate:

"finally my package arrived. I didn't buy the double arkansas I wanted earlier, the seller was acting strange and not too keen on providing detailed pictures. So I purchased 6x2 Black Arkansas and 3x1 Soft Arkansas from Dan's in the US. I still need to SiC polish it. Dan's stones are very flat out of the box and even have rounded edges. Happy that I finally took the plunge. Now I want to buy a vintage Washita somewhere."
