Are you supposed to tip attendees at full-service gas stations?

I know to tip the pizza delivery guy, the bell boy at hotels, the barber, etc., but do you tip the attendees at full-service gas stations, like the ones that are required by law in New Jersey? I would think no because you have no other option, as opposed to having the choice to not have your pizza delivered or carrying your own suitcases, but I do not live in New Jersey, so.....

I'm from nyc so when I go to jersey it's odd to have my gas pumped- mandatory. sometimes I give a buck. maybe 2/3 times. I always fill up in nj. cheaper gas

I was a child the last time I ever saw a full service gas station here. They are extinct.

Hmmm, I always do, but then again I only have my gas pumped for me when it is too stinking cold to stand out there and do it myself. Then that guy deserves a few bucks.

On the Jersey Turnpike its the law that an attendant pump your gas. There is no self service. The reasoning I don't know.

Good gas pumpers lobby at the capital I guess. I never fueled a car in NJ, but as a professional driver I was allowed to pump my own diesel fuel.

There is one on Cleveland's far east side that has been open for decades. I have driven past it for years, finally stopped last week. The attendant checked my oil, cleaned the windows, and did everything but offer me free plates for five fill up's. It was interesting to say the least.

The last time I went to NJ, I forgot about the self-service thing. Pulled up to the pump, jumped out and grabbed the handle, you would have thought I pulled a gun on the attendee. He saw my Oklahoma plates and granted me forgiveness, he asked me if we were still at war with the Indians,... no joke.

Back in the day here in Massachusetts, service station attendants were not tipped as I recall, but I was pretty young then. However, it was pretty common for the attendant to clean your windshield and offer to check your oil, topping it off if necessary.

A couple of years ago, I stopped at a Citgo station in Wilmington, Vermont which was full-service. The car was dusty as we had been driving though a mini-drought The attendant did such an outstanding job of cleaning the windshield with the squeegee that I gave him a few bucks.

There are sill a few full-service gas stations here, which I stopped using because even though I would instruct them to not top off my compact car tank because it overflows and fills the passenger compartment with fumes, they would still do it - they're loss.

New Jersey's insistence on full-service sounds like a bit of featherbedding, IMHO.

Maybe because they had alot 'drive-off' gas thefts. However, I don't think we have any left in Michigan.

Its the law the I guess because it is a dangerous flammable liquid. Seems outdated to me. I do not tip if in Jersey nor do I see others.

FYI in New York City it is unlawful for anyone under 21 to pump gas yet you can drive at 18 with a full license. One of those laws that are never enforced or even known.

Growing up in Arkansas one of my jobs while I was in high school was as a "pump jockey." Tips weren't expected and weren't routinely given, but when I did get one, it was GREATLY appreciated!

New Jersey doesn't have full service gas stations. They're just pump jockeys.

Here in my area I can think of a couple of full service stations. But back in the day, it was possible to have someone pump your gas, clean the windshield, check the oil and all of the fluids under the hood, check the air in your tires, give accurate directions to the place you are going to, and give you some Green Stamps or the latest promo item when all is said and done.

When self service came out in the 70's it killed full service because you were able to get the same gas for a cheaper price. People are always willing to trade service for cheap.
