What's new

Are these ivory, bone or plastic scales?

Are these scales ivory, bone or plastic? They are both Schulze razors with "945" written on the back.

EDIT: I added a close up pic. BTW the yellow one is much lighter.

Looks like bone or horn on top and plastic on the bottom razor.
Could be wrong, and the top could be french ivory, an earlier version of plastic.
Hard to tell from the pics, but there doesn't appear to be any grain whatsoever to indicate ivory, and the color doesn't seem right for ivory on either.

A red hot needle will melt plastic in a small spot you dont want to see. Bone and ivory will not melt.......

It is hard to tell from photographs, but the top one appears to have striations. Also, there are areas that are turning pink. This might suggest that the top razor could be either ivory or horn, but not likely bone.

Looks like both are plastic to me..

I'm going with that too.

Hot pin test will confirm one way or 'tother.

Edit: Do it outside. Some early types of plastic are quite flammable.

I'm gonna say plastic. If you take a knife or razor blade and pick an inconspicuos place to shave some material and it curls its definately not ivory or bone.
