What's new

Are there differences between the Gillette Fatboy years?

I've not had a DE in a few years, and I'm feeling the itch again - traded it for a pretty awesome Schick Injector a few years back. (Looking on eBay, and it's very hard for me to not buy the first one I see.)

Are there any differences between 1958 and 1961? What about with G1, G2, and G3?

I will be watching this thread for the true experts to weigh in on your question. I'm a casual collector/aficionado and I do not believe Gillette made any changes in the 3+ tears they produced the Adjustable "195" (Fat Boy). The G1, G2, G3 are all the same year (1961), just different quarters and I can't imagine there would be any design differences. The real changes came in 1961+ when they stopped making the Fat Boy and introduced the Slim Adjustable which had a much longer production run. Any original adjustable is a great addition!

I'm not positive on what years had the differences that I'm thinking of , but there was a thread less than a year ago and I want to say that pointed out a difference up near the adjuster. I'm going to try find the thread, but its been awhile.

1958, 59 and early 60 can be unscrewed to service the razor. After that they must be forced apart to get into the handle.
Also the 1958, D-1 Red Dots are pricey but neat to have.

Here's the thread. Unfortunately, my Imageshack account had a problem and I lost the pictures.

And there it is! I happen to have a bunch of fatboys with me at work. So here we go in this order from left to right they are : D-4 collar, E-1 collar, E-2 collar, F-1 no collar ,F-2 no collar , G-1 no collar.

The next shot is the D-4 next to the G-1 at the collar and knob.

That is one variation of the FatBoy we did not cover. It is call an Executive and many hold it above the standard FatBoy.........Congrats!!

and here I was, going "hmm, nice finish, I like the grips, and it's not a fortune"...*CLICK*

What's different about it?

Two things come to mind; 1) It's gold plated and 2) the knurled handle is different from the FatBoy. Some say it was made with closer tolerances but I can not speak to that. They are very nice shaves.

***edit: I just recalled a 3rd unique feature, the detent spring is black instead of FatBoy red.......:) edit****

Indeed, I wish they'd left them all un-screwable end-piece, it would make my life a lot easier at times.

I prefer my 58' over my 61'. Can't really say why but my 61's replated but I owned another 61' and I could feel some difference in the knurling, better grip in my 58' over my old not replated 61'.
