are all techs equal?

I began with an EJ89 as many other new guys do then I bought an old type to try something drastically different but havnt quite mastered it yet. I also bought a nice looking tech which I believe is from the 40s. mr. razor lists it as a slim handle tech and looks like a skinny version of the fat handle. I shaved with it today and it was a superb shave! I thought it might be poor as I hear people saying they're too mild but I found it did the job just fine! my question is.... do each of the different styles of the tech shave differently? or is it a case of 'if you've tried one, you've tried 'em all' just with different handles? thanks guys

I have both a Fat handled Tech and a ball end Tech. They both shave great but they are different. The fat handled Tech is milder and if anything similar to an EJ DE89L so I tend to use sharper blades like Gillette 7 o'clock yellows or Gillette Platinums in the fat handled Tech whereas the ball end Tech works great with blades like the Astra Platinums.

Hi! I would say this is a ymmv type of thing. I have a couple of "Techs" and find them too mild for me. Like a Slim on 1 or 2. Although at one point Gillette was calling a lot of other shavers Tech also. But it is a very forgiving , comfortable shaver to use. I like that one can put a Feather, Super Iridium in it and enjoy a dfs. They just don't whack my whiskers like an open comb can, but of course ymmv. Enjoy!

I've found that the pre war (1938-41) tech razors with the D shaped lather reliefs shave closer than the post war (1941-1979) straight lather relieve models (this is the US tech razor)

I have also found that the 1940's British flat base plate tech shaves closer than either of the US models do.

Right now my favorite tech is the 1940's narrow handle flat base plate British Tech.

While not a Tech, the Star brand of de razor is very similar to a Tech but in my opinion is just a touch more aggressive. I've been using one for a month or so and have been enjoying the shaves. Just another possible option for those on the lookout for a Tech-like three piece razor with a little more bite.

The short answer is that they're not the same. I swear by the triangular slot (bottom plate) Techs but IMO the oblong and aluminum techs are a little more mild.I'd say that the English one that Turtle posted and the triangular slot ones tend to be a tad bit more aggressive.

While I haven't tried the British Tech yet, I have tried both American Techs, and agree that the older ones with the triangular slots on the base plate are more aggressive. They are excellent shavers, and the only razor I've bought more than one of. I'm actually looking for a third to give to my son. He has tried half a dozen of my razors, and his favorite is the pre-war Tech. I'm proud of his outstanding taste in razors.

As usual, Turtle gets it right. Have a few examples of this British Tech and one or two of the triangle hole American. The British Tech is definitely a better shave, heavier and better balanced. IMO.

That's the very same razor I have :)

Would anybody be kind enough to post a picture of the US tech with triangular slots? I'm not quite sure which one you mean...

Short answer: no. I like the pre-war triangular slot Tech with a weighted down fat handle the best. It's a little more aggressive IMO. I've also tried the British aluminum Tech and the Canadian Tech with the parallel slots. They both seem a little more mild to me.

I have several Tech Razors all British and I think they are great razors. Nice and nimble, with a sharp blade they give me a DFS or at times BBS. They never seem to give me razor burn or nicks and as some one pointed out to me BBS lasts a few hours a sore face lasts a few days.......
Tried a few different types and yes they do differ, the most agressive one for me is the Hybrid. Still a good every day razor !!
