Are all Gillette SS's alike?

And I'm wondering if the '54 Gillette Super Speed is OK for a beginner? Thanks in advance.

Here's a pic.

They aren't all alike - but a 1954 model is as good a place to start as any (I use a 1955 model by default - tried many others but keep reverting to the 1955 or 1958)

I think the flair tip Super Speeds are an EXCELLENT beginner's razor, no doubt. The non-adjustable nature leaves one more variable out of the equation, and the weight and feel and non-aggressive nature of them all make for ease of use. DON'T use that vintage blade though (unless you're just using that as a stock picture). Go for something like Derby, Israeli Personna, Dorco 301, red pack Personnas, etc. You want something that won't eat your face off. Good luck!

I started with a 1957 SS that looks just like the one in the picture. It is a perfectly acceptable starter razor (and the one in the picture looks very nice). You may never need to buy another razor.

Those razors are just great... I think it's a very good starting point! I still have one as I love those!

My first DE was a 54 SS and the one I use on a daily basis is a 54 SS that looks EXACTLY like the one in your picture.

Great razor for a beginner. Enjoy!

The 1954 Super Speed is a fine razor, not aggressive, and should give no more problems to a beginner then any other razor. Don't forget that technique is everything. I have a Z2 in my rotation and a Z3 in my permanent SS collection.

I have a flare tip superspeed that is in almost mint condition that I never use because I'm afraid it won't shine anymore lol...but superspeeds are great razors...

The SuperSpeeds had a production run that spanned the late-40's to the late-80's. In that time there were three major design changes and some small, incremental, evolutionary refinements. They were produced in (very) large numbers, yet Gillette maintained exceptional quality control throughout its production lifetime.

The SuperSpeed is a fine, low cost, middle of the road, TTO razor that is an excellent shaver. Find one in decent shape, and you can use it with confidence. They are great for new or returning wetshavers, and suitable for old-hands alike.

Have fun!

I'm a newbie who is already afflicted with the collecting bug (to use, not to gaze at on the shelf). I just received a C-4 super speed that I bought out of sheer vanity to match my birth year and quarter. So, I'm really hoping the '57 is a great razor.

Yea...after furthur review my only complaint is possibly overpaying. But there are plenty of SS's on Ebay and the prices range from $10-40ish. I rushed it.
But I really can't wait to use it and get a real man's shave. Bye bye, Fusion!
