What's new

Aqua Velva

I love the soothing coolness and I love that menthol burn but I'm not so sure about the scent. (classic ice blue) I don't dislike it but I was wondering if there are any other aftershaves out there that have the same cooling/menthol qualities but with a bit more of a "contemporary" (younger?) scent. More than once when wearing it my wife has said that it reminds her of her Dad because he apparently used to use it. Does anyone out there know of any alternative aftershaves with the same qualities but different, more contemporary/young scent?

You could give Proraso a try. It has about the same amount of menthol and is a good healing aftershave. The scent is very nice too.

I think I read on here one time, and after a few bottles of each, I fully agree: Skin Bracer is everything Aqua Velva tries to be.

+1 to Proraso AS: it's got lots of good stuff to heal and soothe, a nice menthol kick, and it's scent will rapidly burn off in minutes.

I apply Raso AS, get dressed, have my porridge and coffee (yes, we are creatures of routine) and then apply a cologne over the top with no clash.

Hope that helps.

my girlfriends dad was a brut man! i am not a fan of the aqua velva myself, but i have been using Booster Ice Lime and i've been very pleased with it. my next choice will be some lucky tiger bay rum i think, either that or some Pinaud clubman from walgreens

Thank you to all for your recommendations.

I love a good bargain, who doesn't? I decided to check out the Barbasol Pacific Rush. I lost some of the bargain by having to drive 20+ miles round trip to the nearest Dollar General but I think it was still well worth it. I found that DG had both the Pacific Rush and the Brisk scents. (They also had the Aqua Velva blue for around $3.25, even cheaper than Walgreens) I didn't care for the Brisk but the Pacific Rush had a nice scent. At $1.75 per bottle, how could you go wrong? Since it was so cheap and to help justify the trip I ended up buying 2 bottles which should last me for a while. Once I reached my car, I splashed a little of the Pacific Rush on the back of my hand. At first, I didn't like it. It seemed to have a strong alcohol smell
to it (kind of like an alcohol based mouthwash) which dominated the scent and I was a bit disappointed. I guess this stuff just takes a little bit of time to settle. After a short while, the alcohol smell is now gone leaving a very nice, light, clean scent. I definitely prefer this scent to Aqua Velva's. The next step is to see how it performs after a shave. If it has the same soothing, cooling, menthol burn feeling as the Aqua Velva, then this is an all around winner! I'm really looking forward to giving it a go.

Floid Blue. Has the same cooling and mentholating properties as AV but the scent is lighter and less recognizeable by the average person. Also, many of the Myrsol AS have a nice light scent that are not very common and just about all of them have the cooling effects of menthol. The only problem with Floid Blue and the Myrsol lineup of AS is the price since they are hard to get.

I just tried the Barbasol Pacific Rush after my shave and I'm going to give it two thumbs up! At $1.75 a bottle, this stuff is a great bargain! It was cooling and the menthol blast was awesome! After a short die down period, approx. 10 min., it has a very pleasant, fresh scent that is significantly more subtle than the Aqua Velva. (which I consider a good thing, the Aqua Velva can be a bit overpowering) I can barely even smell it now so I'm guessing you could wear cologne over this without a clash. This one's a big winner for a super cheap, everyday aftershave splash.

I'm also a fan of menthol AS splashes.

AV Ice Blue. I actually like the scent but I understand how it, like Old Spice, can't help reminding people of old men. The scent lingers fairly long.

Barbasal Pacific Rush. Great cheapie product BUT the scent goes away faster than anything I've ever tried. (I like a lingering AS scent to remind me of my good shave throughout the day.)

Proraso. A more effective "healing" product with lots of menthol, a scent I love, but I wish the scent lasted longer. Doesn't fade as fast as the Barbasal but still pretty fast. This one is far more pricey than the drug store/dollar store products.

Speik. Another great "healing" product. Not as strong on menthol but I LOVE the scent. Again, doesn't last as long as I'd like it to. Another pricier product.

Floid Vigoroso. Crazy Menthol content with a long lasting complex scent. This scent is not for everyone. My wife dislikes it and dismisses it as a Spanish Wh*** scent. I like that it sticks with me though.

Sounds like an AS win!

Just to throw another option in hte mix, Osage Rub is nice if you love the freeze! Also, you can always mix or follow it up with your favorite scented AS since Osage doesn't have much of it's own scent. None of my local stores had it, so I got a 14 oz bottle for $10 with shipping on Amazon.

i like to mix 50/50 aqua velva and osage rub...the osage tends to mute the creepy old musky man undertones that drive me nuts with aqua velva by itself...i love floid blue but it's getting a little too expensive for me to enjoy every shave. proraso is a great one too, good modern scent, great performance

I HATED the smell of AV ice blue. I really regretted not smelling it before checking out but I'd heard lots of good reviews.

Proraso green was much better scent wise, but Nivea balm is my go to now if I feel like I had a rough shave.
