Aqua de Parma cologne opinions

Afternoon gents:

After reading some posts and a review here at B&B, I am considering buying a bottle of AdP cologne.

The descriptions I have read vary, but the interesting thing is, that I have yet to read a negative review or opinion as of yet. I am however, trying to figure how this scent compares to similar "powdery" colognes I already have, such as Pen's Racquets or Hammam Bouquet.

Your views as to what AdP cologne most reminds you of would be appreciated,

Best,

Chris

I hate Hammam Bouquet in every way possible, so I can't give an opinion on that, but I have Racquets and a sample of the original Acqua di Parma Colonia.

AdP is an old-fashioned variation of citrus eau de colognes. It has a citrus top, a very prominent rose middle and a bit of a musky drydown. It doesn't last long on my skin and skews just a bit too feminine for my tastes. It's elegant and old-fashioned, but I couldn't justify springing for a whole bottle. It's more fresh and less "baby-oil-floral" than Hammam Bouquet.

Racquets is a totally different animal, IMO. Very soapy, woody, and resinous with a masculine powdery edge. Nothing like AdP, really.

Hey, no problem.

AdP (Colonia) is a good frag. Manages to be fresh and elegant at the same time. It's just not masculine enough for me, but as they say, YMMV.

I have the Assoluta and Intensa...great colognes from a world class company...but not at all like my Pen's frags....totally different scents IMHO

I just received a bottle of ADP Colonia.I purchased because of the reviews.Yes,the scent is good but it is not an over $100 fantastic scent and the staying power is almost nonexistent,I doused myself with 5-6 sprays at 6:30 and now at 8:35 I cannot even tell I put it on.I will not be purchasing again.

got a bottle of Montale Red Vetyver and a tie I could trade

I can't compare AdP with the Pens. I don't care for powdery fragrances, so I have avoided Penhaligon stuff because of references to powder in the reviews. Colonia Intensa is not that, although some reviews have mentioned powder in passing. I don't get powder. It is pretty complex with transitions that are amazing. On me it lasts and lasts, and changes. It is decidedly masculine with cedar, leather, more wood, musk, with separation that is, well, amazing.

Intensa, I get leather. Assoluta, I get more lemon, more like Pledge furniture polish. I get roses mostly and some citrus out of Colonia and my preferece is colonia. Yes, it peters out some after 3 or 4 hours, but for a Saturday knock around cologne, perfect for me.

I tested some ADP Colonia in the store and it smelled like L'Occitane's signature scent to me :001_huh:. I think my nose was having an off day.

In addition to staying power, and the scent, the most important thing for me is how does this make me "feel" and what does it remind me of.
Well - the assoluta is the first one that reminds me of my high school years - and it smells very fresh - i.e. if I put that on - I feel like I have just taken a shower.

When I first sampled AdP Colonia I was not a fan but after giving it a second try several months later, I'm a huge fan. I consider Colonia fresh and elegant, very versatile fragrance that can be worn to work or on a formal occasion. Assoluta is my second favorite but consider it more of a casual cologne. AdP colognes also give me better longevity than other colognes 8-10 hours.

As far as comparing AdP to Pen's fragrances, I haven't found a Pen's fragrance that I can wear. I love the smell of Blenheim Bouquet but it smells terrible on me.

Nice series of comments and observations gentlemen, thanks. kg0mz, great description of the scent!

Chris,

In addition to Acqua di Parma, you could also take in consideration Acqua Classica Borsari di Parma.
Borsari actually is the first cologne produced in Parma, since 1880.
It is lesser known than AdP, but, in my opinion, equally good and much more reasonably priced.

This morning at 11:00am I applied Adp and now it is 7:30pm and I still smell it,7 and a half hours, but yesterday it did not last 2 hours. What would make it better today, the only thing I did different was shake the bottle a few times.

Not sure...could be the amount and location of the application. Did you put you shirt on right after you applied AdP today but not yesterday?

Yes,you are right, yesterday I did not put on a shirt right after spraying it on,I watched tv awhile before getting dressed.
This is why I love this forum, people with lots of knowledge and are willing to help.
Thanks

Not a fan at all of Hammam Bouquet.
And I really didn't like Racquets either...too powdery, not enough citrus. Too much green/piney/astringent/tonic notes.

Acqua Di Parma Colonia (not to be confused with assoluta or intensa) on the other hand, while it would imo be better without the lavender & powder, is one of the classic EDC's, and with outstanding longevity for an EDC, due to it's prominent Bulgarian-Rose/Tonka-Bean base. And of course the citrus top is great as well. There are many older EDC's that have not held up as well, but Acqua Di Parma Colonia, I have a feeling will always be around. It's the smell of class.
