Apple Cider Vinegar Aftershave?

Hi all,

I was wondering if any one had any experiences (positive or negative) regarding the use of Apple Cider Vinegar as an aftershave, or use as a toner before putting a good ASB.

I've been using it the last week and I can say personally it's been working quite well. I'll have a great shave, splash my face with nice cold water, and then put less than table spoon's worth in my hand and pat my face.

It stings like hell, but afterwards my face feels great.

The one thing i'm a bit concerned about though is if using it undiluted is bad for my skin/ too harsh? It stung quite a bit the first time, but I think my skin is getting used to it now (not sure if that's a good or bad thing).

Any comments, thoughts, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated :001_smile

Cheers

I understand that scent, like flavor, is highly subjective. All you have to do is look at the Lilac Vegetal threads to confirm that. That having been said, doesn't vinegar smell terrible? Excellent quality, inexpensive aftershaves are available everywhere. I wouldn't enjoy the smell of vinegar myself, and I wouldn't want to be the guy at work that everybody thinks smells sour. Have you gotten any reactions from anybody about it?

Thanks.

There goes my idea for the Sears DieHard Aftershave.

LOL: We already look younger because we scrape off a few layers of dead skin on a daily basis.

The addition of green tea as an infusion will neutralize that toner recipe somewhat.

Let the ladies have the chemical peel. They describe it as a "soft glow" I'd describe it as a minor burn. YMMV.

That toner recipe also calls for diluting the vinegar by equal amounts of water, so I don't think that I am in disagreement with you about splashing vinegar on right out of the bottle.

Having said that, I don't completely understand peoples desire sometimes to multipurpose products that were not intended for the original use.
As Nid says, there are plenty of products developed specifically for the purpose of aftershave.
It's use as a diluted toner aside, toner isn't my first choice as an aftershave.
In recent years there seems to be a rush to using food products on your body.
Thanks but yogurt goes down the hatch not on the face.
Watch soon for the Jello Chocolate Pudding Shave Cream.

I'm just reporting back on my attempt to use this in my morning shave. Everything was going fine until I topped it all off with a light dusting of baking soda, used as a shaving talc. I heard a popping sound, then everything went black. I just woke up a few minutes ago--I had been blown backward through the door of my shower and knocked unconscious. Still, I must say that I do feel refreshed.

This whole discussion motivates me to try mixing gin, Taylor's No. 44 Victorian Lime A/S, and a splash of tonic water--might make a refreshing summertime drink! Sorry to digress. :001_rolle

Using Apple Cider Vinegar as an aftershave, if diluted properly, will not have any adverse affects on your skin. Vinegar has been used, and is recommended as a hair rinse to neutralize the affects of alkalai. Our skin is a little on the alkalai side, so using an acid to help neurtalize it will help. Vinegar is an excellent hair rinse. Now, the pungent aroma of vinegar is the problem. Not sure people want to go around smelling sour. Use the vinegar splash once a week, and you'll probably do well.

I use VINAIGRE DE TOILETTE by DIPTYQUE as aftershave.

"This toilet vinegar, based on a 19th century recipe, is steeped in extracts of several plants, woods and spices. It can be used in many ways: As an after shave, bath oil, air freshener, and as a facial toner."

Here's another one that might appeal:

Aloe & Vinegar Toner

The aloe in this formula soothes the skin, while the vinegar and alcohol help to tone.

Ingredients:
8 oz. witch hazel distillate
4 oz. apple cider vinegar
1 ounce formulator's alcohol
1/2 teaspoon freeze dried aloe vera

Combine all ingredients in a sterile bottle and cap. Shake vigorously. Apply to skin once daily. This formula is self-preserved with alcohol and vinegar. Keeps for about 2-3 months

Apple cider vinegar smells a little too much like urine for me to think about using it as an aftershave. Please, just go buy some Proraso.

Hi all,

I appreciate all the responses and advice. So i haven't had anyone say they've noticed the smell or anything (I use musgo real as an asb which i think nulls out the vinegar). I've been diluting to about 50/50 and at this point i barely smell anything after i've splashed some on my face.

I was going to go with a trarditional as splash but i'm a little hestitant to get something with alcohol in it, or any other harsh chemicals (why I tried AC vinegar in the first place).

Although i've been hearing good things about witch hazel so I might pick that up next as well. Do you dilute that as well or just splash some on after shave?

Thanks again, definitely appreciate all the input!

I scent my witch hazel with a blend of citrus EO's and other EO's.

I drink apple cider vinegar some mornings mixed with free chopped garlic and red onions !!!

Very very healthy and it keeps an old man like me strong as an OX

I don't know about using vinegar as an aftershave, but it works great for soothing a sunburn! I don't think vinegar will do you that much harm as it's only about 3% acetic acid, but Witch Hazel would have a lot less bite!

Now that is funny!
