I am looking at purchasing a 28mm synbad with a 50mm loft from ap shave co. My aim is to have a brush that is soft but has decent backbone with splay at the tips. Would this be a good set up?
SynBad is incredibly soft and has excellent splay. I believe SynBads were originally designed with "natural hair like splay" in mind. SYNthetic BADger.
It has enough backbone.. but it's not a high backbone knot. Having a 28mm knot at 50mm loft will increase backbone, but at the cost of splay and flow. I wouldn't personally have a 28mm SynBad knot shorter than 56mm. If high backbone is a must then there are better knots.
I went through a high backbone phase during the first year, but have evolved to prefer moderate backbone leaning toward floppy.
