AOS Turnback, can anyone do or recommend a restorer ?

3 yrs ago I bought a very expensive AOS turnback travel shaving brush, silvertip, like the one pictured below, the trouble is it has been a constant 6-8 hair shedder, everytime I use it which is at least once weekly or fortnightly ( i travel a lot with my job), it is also VERY floppy, I hate it ! the hair that is, I LOVE the handle and design.

is there anyone (possibly in australia) who can put a new bunch of hair into this for me, if not locally , then in the US or europe then ?

I can't offer a recommendation on brush restorers. However, there's a very neat posting within B&B entitled "Step-by-Step Ever-Ready Brush Restoration". It even gives the name of two firms which sell brush knots all set to be installed in a handle. If you're married to your traveling brush for life, this may be the right answer for you.

Good luck.

thanks shavenmaven, I did see that one, but given I have 5 thumbs and 3 left hands, I would think this is beyond my capability to DIY

I am sure there are a few of us in the the US that wouldn't mind giving it a go. The turn around time though might be a bit much. I wouldn't mind trying it myself even, but I am sure there are better people here at it. What are you thinking about sticking in there other than silvertip?

time is not a concern for me, I would like to replace it with a firmer silvertip or the next grade below, nice thick and firm hairs . . open to suggestion.

Well Rudy Vey certainly has done some bang up restorations. I am not quite sure how deep the knot can be set in that handle, but I would contact Rudy and see what he thinks about this. A shorter loft knot could make that into a very nice brush.

And it would have had a wonderful traveling vacation too:001_rolle

The catch might be findig a knot that small. Blankity-Blanks seem to have them as small as 14mm.

I just hope that it doesn't end up being a crazy cost for you. After getting a knot, and shipping both ways you might have ended up paying enough to cover a Wee Scot heh.

Looks a lot like a Vulfix turnback. which in super badger is $60 US. Maybe someone with experience with that grade of badger from vulfix can comment.

The AoS brush is probably 18mm knot? Blankity-blanks seems to have a size you would be looking for around $20 US. So as long as the shipping both ways doesn't ream you for a cross the pond shipping colonoscopy, then it seems pretty reasonable task.

Glenn

Was going to offer assistance till I saw this:

I paid over AUD$250 for it 4 yrs ago.

:001_smile

I'd considering giving it a go yourself. It's not hard, just requires some care and patience !
(Two things I've got very little of, but restores are working for me ( but on MUCH cheaper brushes )) :001_smile

Get rid of the old knot ( knife, scissors, pliers, drill ) then get the measurements ( diameter and depth ) and let Tony from TGN know ( or post here )

If you're interested I've even got a couple of old "****e" brushes I can mail to you to practice on first !!!!!

You'll get a certain sense of satisfaction doing it yourself. :thumbup1:

If you do want a professional job though, yep I'd recommend Rudy !

Bernd at Shavemac (in Germany) does restores and his knots come in a variety of grades, fan or bulb shapes and he does a great job.
