I don't know if I will get around to baking biscuits this year, but I will definitely raise a glass to the brave men and women who put their lives on the line (and of course to those who made the ultimate sacrifice) for the type of lives and the freedoms which we enjoy today.

In 1934 Atatürk wrote a tribute to the ANZACs killed at Gallipoli:

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well."

Honestly, ANZAC day, IMO, is the most truely patriotic day on the Australian calendar.

Australia day is just an excuse to get a day off work, have a BBQ, and either act like a bogan or whinge like a lefty.

ANZAC day we generally get it right.
