Anyone try one of the Oozuku JNAts from Fendrihan?

My Google-fu is weak and I can't seem to find any discussion on the Oozuku JNats offered by Alfred (Fendrihan). I took the chance anyways, ordering #19, figuring that for $67(tax and shipping incl), it's a worthy gamble on a 5.5 x 3" stone.

At my admittedly poor honing skill level, I doubt whether I will be able to provide a correct evaluation of the stone. Has anyone else picked up one of these?

No but a shuobodani 100 stone can be had from Maksim at JNS for $71. Its bigger than that one and it can put a great edge on as I have one as do many others. Not knocking the stone or the seller.

I have not tried the Fendrihan Ozuku, but I can vouch for the Shoubudani...it's a great stone for the money...I do have an Ozuku but it came from JNS...

Ozukus tend to be very hard stones so it'll probably make a good finisher....Does the Fend. one come with a Tomo? If not then you could always use a DMT credit card to raise a slurry...

Understood, JNS and TheJapanBlade offer all kinds of wonderful eye candy.

Shipping to Canada will add another $20-40 and most likely will hit Customs (unless they agree to ship via mail and not couriers) which tags a bunch of "processing fees" on, even if they don't charge duty.

I have a botan, 2 x mejiro and a tomo to go with my Ozaki Kiita (about 2" wide), so that shouldn't be an issue.

I think unless the stone is volcanic pumice it will work well once you figure it out. YMMV and all that but too much emphasis is placed on " level x hardness" vs lack of toxic inclusions and fineness of substrate.

How would I tell if it's volcanic pumice? :tongue_sm

But seriously, thanks folks. Another 15 or so years until I retire, so I should have it figured out by then........ I hope.

Let us know how you make out and share some photos too, please. As stated above, it's usually a matter of figuring it out.

If you struggle for a while, see if one of the resident regular Jnat users would be willing to test it will you and share their thoughts. I swapped stones for testing and tested members stones before and found it to be a very useful exercise.

My Oozuku from Alfred(Fendrihan) arrived yesterday, but it being SWMBO's BDay, I didn't get a chance to play with it until this morning.

Out of the box...

After lapping and champhering the edges(it wasn't quite flat upon arrival)
It still might need a little more flattening right on the front, but the edge doesn't touch that, so I thought it was okay to use.

And with some slurry generated from a DMT.

I did use it this morning to rehone my Wapi using a botan, mejiro and tomo progression. Lapped 20 on cotton and 50 on leather and had a pretty gosh-darn good shave. Used almost a water pass on my ATG to gauge how it was cutting, and by golly, lots of little stubble was quite visible on the blade, so I give this a thumbs up! :thumbup1:

It does look really nice don't it? Can't really beat that deal with a stick as sometimes you would drop down to a 2" wide for a Jnat in that price range.

So I take it that I didn't end up with some volcanic pumice?
