Anyone tried the Daune Shavette?

I am a happy DE shaver but I think I will try a shavette at some point. I am aware of the consensus that real straights are less tricky to start with but learning to handle a razor without being able to judge wether I did a good job at stropping or honing puts me off at this point.

I was looking around at what's available and stumbled upon the Daune shavette. It's quite ugly IMHO and it looks like it takes a complete DE blade but it might be a safe start but I am unable to find any feedback on this razor.

Does anyone have experience with this thing?

First I've ever seen one of these. I don't care for the looks of it, and it seems from the description that it might be complicated.

Take a look at any of the Parker straights. The Parker's are well made and hold the blade very secure. They function like a regular straight, and the price sure is right.

+1 on the Parkers. I used the SR1 for about a month and consistently got excellent shaves after the initial learning curve. It was well made, easy to load, and as dpmtherrien said above, it holds the blade very securely.

Yes, both the Parker and the Sanguine appeared on my radar. Somehow both seem to get more respect than the Dovo Shavettes.

I was just intrigued by the odd Daune and the fact there is hardly any feedback to be found on any shaving forum. I do get more hits when googling for "Daune rasoio". by the looks of it might actually be used by Italian barbers.

I was able to get good shaves with the sanguine, but mine was really (and i mean REALLY) lightweight, and once I got the Parker I PIFfed the sanguine. (I later did the same with the Parker once I got the Feather Artist club SS as well!)

I am Italian but living in the UK. I have registered after reading several interesting posts on this forum and decided to write my first post here as I know and use a Daune. Daune razors are quite common in Italy where are used by many barbers. You can buy one for under 8 euros or 6.5GBP there. It is mainly made of light weight plastic with only brass rivets holding the handle together and a metal screw to hold the head back plate in place. These takes regular DE blades in and the blade remains straight, does not bend like in DE safety razor. I guess the good thing about those razor is that they help you learn the right angle necessary to shave with a straight razor but at the same time keeping you safer thanks to the head guard. The other side of the head is curved like in DE heads and therefore hels in finding the contct angle. Although virtually weightless aside of the heavy screw on the head, I find that no real pressure is necessary in using it. The main down point for me is the fact that is less obvious to identify where exactly the blade edge is when shaping the side burns, and being right handed, i find it odd to shave my left side of the face, having to hold the razor upside down, with the curvature for the ring finger being at odd. in fact I have just ordered a Dovo All Stainless Steel shavette to see if I can work better on my left side of the face. I am actually thinking that it may be better to shave someone else safely with this that oneself compared to a Dovo Shavette
I have also read somewhere else on the net that even in the UK someone use it to teach training barbers how to shave and also seen pictures of Carmello Guastella of Melogy (see al pictures http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/commen...llery/#0?&_suid=13571358748170396528097020827) and an English speaking Italian barber using it on clients (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0-TwlYOzXg).

This is a video of a barber in Italy shaving in 4 minutes:

and another one also using a Daune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11HxTIwiob0

Got a Daune, shaved with it, it's magnificent.
Really a modern Durham Duplex with perfect head geometry for a very fast comfortable and super efficient shave.
Definitely my favourite shavette.
If it was made of metal it would be perfect, but for now it's just absolutely brilliant :thumbup1:

I have a question for you! Where did you get the all black daune! I see it online with black handle but still chrome shank! Please lmk I'm trying to purchase.

The Nomad Barber on YouTube has a good video where he performs a shave on a client with the Daune shavette.

You get a pretty good idea what it's about if you're interested.

The Daune sure is a lot of fun!
