Anyone tried making their own soap?

Not yet, but I've been doing a lot of research on the cold process method of soap making (once the new garage gets cleaned up, I'll have room for a work station). Thanks for the link...this is the first recipe I've seen specifically referencing "shave soap."

There are many recipes on the net for making your own shave soap. The recipe listed above has olive oil as it's primary ingredient. A shave soap made from olive oil will give very sub-par results, and won't lather properly.

There is quite a bit involved in making a shaving soap that works well. It's not as simple as tossing a few ingredients together.

If you undertake such an endeavor, I think you will be in for a long period of trial and error, before you achieve a product even closely approaching usable.

ditto what michiganlover said.

You could probably make a nice shower soap using that recipe. I think shower soaps are a lot easier to make than shaving soaps, because the lather requirements are not as stringent. Even a bubbly lather will clean your body just fine, but you don't want to shave using that same lather.

Michiganlover, do you have a recipe for shave soap? When I start making my own, I'd like to at least start with a recipe that others have tested and approved.

that posted recipe DOES have castor oil, coconut oil, and palm oil for a thicker lather and the Bentonite clay for cushion. It might not be horrible, per se.
