Anyone Have Experience with Dyeing a Shell Strop?

Rose to the occasion
Got a vintage Craftsman in nice shape but it's natural colored and it kind of freaks me out. I got it cheap and I've always wanted a black strop......am I nut's for wanting to mess with it?

Speaking of horse butts…
Black is one of the hardest colors to dye and get a uniform, deep color. Many dyes will stiffen leather as they dry and change the surface feel considerably and is why I will only offer colors done at the tannery and "drum dyed".

You might want to experiment on other scrap leather to at least get a good process down for applying the dye and to see how it affects the feel. It won't be exactly like doing it on shell but will give an indication and maybe save you from any damage to your shell strop.
