Anyone have any experience with a Gillette Bulldog?

I'm new to this forum and so far it has more than exceeded my expectations. I've been a wet shaver for a year, but only have rudimentary knowledge of the craft. I've learned a ton from this forum of shaving jedi masters :)

Anyway, I'm eyeing a Gillette Bulldog officer's set that was issued during WWII. A very hefty price but a beautiful razor. I don't want to invest the $ just to add eye candy to my collection, but will invest if this is a great shaver that offers something I don't already have. Anyone know anything about the Bulldog? I have a couple of vintage open comb Gillettes, including a 1905 single ring. How does the Bulldog compare? If it uses the same head I probably wont get it, but I'm not exactly sure if this is a different head than most of the other vintage Gillette open combs. If anyone has any experience with this razor I would love to hear about it. Thanks

It has the same head as an Old Type ie. your Single Ring. But the handle size can make a difference if you like larger handles.

I bought one from another member and turned around and sold it to another member who sold it to a third shortly thereafter. Perhaps it was something wrong with this particular razor, but it was both aggressive and uncomfortable. I favor open combs and enjoy aggressive razors and have a few of them, but this was just an uncomfortable and awkward beast. It was heartbreaking because I really wanted to like it.

I have a user grade, uncased Canadian Bulldog, and as much as I love the looks of it, I find it to be a very rough shave for whatever reason.

My single rings and old types all seem to be much smoother, maybe it is simply a handle geometry issue.

That being said, if I come across one I'm buying it, they are truly one of the nicest razors in my eyes with that spiral fluting on the handle, I hope to come across an american version soon as my canadian has the wonky backwards handle fluting

Love my Bulldog Old Type. Not nearly as aggressive as I expected. Smooth shaver and now in my regular rotation.
never tried any other Old Type's, this is my first. Seems comparable to my New long comb, more or less.

Those are definitely one of the nicest looking razors I've seen. Its hard not to bite and spend the $. I know I will eventually. I'm surprised another manufacturer hasn't made a replica of these.
