What's new

anyone getting the swine flu shot?

No. Hell would have to freeze over before I ever visit the public health clinic again (and my doctor will not order it).

No, I also don't get the regular flu shot either. I'm healthy and in my 30's, my risk level is low.

It's already too late for us. My 5yr old has been home from school all week with what everyone is assuming is the swine flu. It hasn't hit her horribly hard, but she's had a 100-102 fever on and off for 4 days and is now having some nasty coughing fits every hour or so. Luckily none of the rest of us seems to have caught it.

My company provides these shots as one of our benefits. We will be getting the regular flu shot, like we do every year, sometime in October. The swine flu shots come three weeks after that. Personally, I've never had any adverse reactions in the past, and I don't get the flu either. So, I'm kind of glad to have this benefit.

Nah, my work provides flu injections for us each year and I have already had mine. Perhaps next years one will incorporate swine prevention. Until then I'll just cross my fingers.

I know there's tons of people who go on and on with an endless stream of conspiracy theories about how it poisons you, harms your immune system, etc. etc. But actual influenza is a very serious illness. Tons of people die every year from it including healthy people. Influenza isn't some weekend of having a head and stomach ache. It can last months and knock you off your feet completely.

I don't think I ever got the flu before I started getting the shots, but that's not any kind of reason not to get it now that it's available.

It's really just a poke in my arm that helps lower the chance of me maybe getting a serious illness, seems a good tradeoff. Takes 15 minutes out of my day and doesn't cost me anything.

Anyone here going for the nasal spray vaccination?

I just saw on the news the H1N1 vaccine will also be provided in a nasal spray which will contain the live virus. Because the live virus is involved, the nasal spray is not recommended for infants, pregnant women, or the sick and lonely old.

I wouldn't categorize flu vaccines as snake oil, but I also have never had one and have no intention of getting one in the future. My answer to the flu shot is leading a hygenic lifestyle and washing my hands a lot. I think it's going to be ok.

I can get flu shots provided by work but they don't really advertise the fact, I only found out about it after the designated day this year had passed. I'll probably get a flu shot next year since I am around a lot of people in my job its a good precaution, but I won't be actively seeking out a swine flu vaccine this year.

I'm not. I think the swine flu is quite overhyped. Regular flu vacs I'd get. I haven't been lately, but I usually stay pretty healthy. Don'y get sick too often, period.

Yep, I work in a Children's Hospital and all employees are required to get a seasonal flu shot. We don't know how much H1N1 vaccine we will get so I can't tell if I am going to get one or not.

Those 6 months to 24 years are most at risk with H1N1, but I am more concered with H1N1 mutating with seasonal flu and creatign something really nasty.

Sadly, both vaccines are really not going to be available until early October and the H1N1 is most contagious 24 hours prior to showing symptoms (so if you get sick, you have already gotten others sick). And healthcare providers must wait 7 days before returning to work...super scary stuff.

I never got one before I had kids either, but if there's an easy, free, way for me to prevent the family from being taken out of commission (missing work, school, all out-of-house activities) for a week or two, then I'm going to do it. I wish it would have been available before this week :frown:

I certainly don't want to head the line! I always get my flu shot at my fall appointment. As to swine flu, I'll go with whatever my doc recommends.

Good point. I've heard that kids can change things a bit.

Many people think flu shots are worthless until they actually get the flu. The flu knocks you on your rear. If you get a significant case once, you can easily see how just a complication or two could take you out or lay you up in a hospital.

That is when people decide the vaccine isn't 'snake oil.'

Also, it is tough to control the flu via hygiene alone. No amount of hand washing can prevent airborne droplets from getting onto your mucus membranes. Remember, the flu isn't like a fecal-oral illness, it is respiratory. It is airborne.
