supposedly the most expensive coffee in the world.
the beans are eaten by an animal, not fully digested, then crapped out by said animal, and used to make coffee. heres the wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak

honestly i'd like to try a cup, and wondering if anyone here has before. can cost up to $50 a cup.

If not what is the most expensive cup of coffee you ever had?
for me its anything from Starbucks.

If we deleted every repetitive post, there would be no more "recommend me a good sandalwood frag," "I can't lather with Williams," and "has XXX been reformulated?" threads. It's fine to let it go. Since you started this thread, we now know about elephant poop coffee. Let me tell you--it's a heck of a thing waiting for an elephant to go when you are standing at the bottom of a coffee bush and it's still up there, climbing around at the top.

haha good point. if anyone finds my bucket list they will think i have one sick fetish "whats with all the coffee he wants to try made from animal poop?" and then their next thought will be something like "oh no! i had coffee at his house last week!! what did i drink!" mawhahaha.

The most expensive coffee that i ever had was the Panama Esmeralda Gesha when it broke the auction record a couple of years ago. Holy crap, was it an amazing coffee. Quite possibly THE most memorable coffee experience of my life. On that note, did you know that there is now elephant poop coffee, too? http://tx-coffee.com/2012/10/16/black-ivory-elephantpoop-coffee/

I didn't get in on this lot, but I did snag a brilliant Gesha last year. It was expensive, but unlike JBM, Kona, or Kopi Luwak - I didn't feel ripped off after. I've never had a coffee with such pronounced floral notes and not a hint of tartness in the finish.

The problem for me is that I can get a coffee that's 90% as good for less than a third of the price. A brilliant Sidama is still $7/lb. for example.

If you want to buy a rare expensive coffee, contact Simon Hseih and see if you can score some Taiwanese varietals. Or look into some of the lots R. Miguel is sourcing in Hawaii.

I think Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson said it best in "Bucket List".

[Carter (Freeman) hands Edward (Nicholson) an article about Kopi Luwak, Edwards favorite
coffee.]
Carter Chambers: Read it.
Edward Cole: [reading] Kopi Luwak is the worlds most expensive
coffee. Though for some, it falls under the category of "too good
to be true." In the Sumatran village, where the beans are grown,
lives a breed of wild tree cat. These cats eat the beans, digest
them and then... defecate. [pauses] The villagers then collect and
process the stools. It is the combination of the beans and the
gastric juices of the tree cat that give Kopi Luwac...
[Carter starts laughing]
Edward Cole: ... its unique flavor... and aroma. Youre $h!tting me!
Carter Chambers: [laughing] Cats beat me to it!
[Carter and Edward both laugh hysterically.]
