Anyone ever tried Thistle Ridge Shaving Soap?

SWMBO bought me a puck of Thistle Ridge Lime Spearmint and a puck of Bay Rum. She liked the smell. Can anyone tell me if these are decent soaps?

Olive oil, distilled water, palm oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, sodium hydroxide, castor oil, bentonite clay, essential oils.

There are shaving soaps with olive oil as an ingredient, but not the first on the list. That's a pretty safe limb you're on!

Probably not but there's one way to find out. Regardless of how good the soap is it was nice of her to think of you.

Probably 90% of farmers market/artisan soaps just suck for shaving. They're slick and not much else. The "lather" dissipates on your face. But I'll echo what was said above...just give it a shot and even if it doesn't work, show your appreciation to your wife for thinking of you.

And get a pump bottle of Kiss My Face unscented at the grocery store to aid the lather so if she wants to see that you're enjoying the soap, you will actually be able to shave with it. :001_tongu

Absolutely! Most of us would be in trouble if not for the support of our better halves. Who knows, you may get lucky and this will be a great shaving soap. If nothing else, all the Farmer's market shaving soaps I've tried made great shower soaps.

Many of us have had loved ones bring home soaps with great intentions, myself included.

Thank them for it and show your gratitude. Do a few test lathers and see how it goes. If it's not suitable on it's own as a shave soap, take the advise above and uber lather it.

If you feel comfortable, or if they ask for your honest opinion on it, let them know the truth. If you don't eventually tell them it's not up to the standard of your other products, you can expect more to come home in the future.

My wife asked and was not hurt when I told her it was a great smelling soap, but not a great performing one. She has come to the realization that my tastes and needs are specific when it comes to shaving and now leaves shave soaps/creams for me to purchase.

Tried it!

The soap lathered well and behaved excellently in the cup. It went on nicely with a fine consistency. A little brush work and I had a nice white lather beard...

that disappeared in under 15 seconds!

SWMBO is showering with it now.

LOL, that's the story of olive oil soaps, it's so terrible! I bought 5 pucks on ebay of some other brand and the smells are INCREDIBLE, better than any of the soaps that actually work but the olive oil kills the lather. I emailed the lady after and she said she never had any complaints....

I think I would have showered with it myself rather than tell SWMNBO that it stunk as a shave soap. I may be a chauvinist but if I cared enough to marry someone that I would at least not hurt her feelings over something this minor. Marriage has enough resentment in it as it is, why create more over a $10 shaving soap. Of course if she directly asked I would not lie to her about it but otherwise I don't think I would bring it up in conversation.

You know my Queen Charlotte Shave Soaps and Creams both have Olive Oil in them and they provide some of the best lather you can buy. I fear that many will now just see the words Olive Oil in the ingredients list and just conclude that it probably is a bad shaving soap or cream. You all know how it goes...You go to make a purchase and you read the ingredients. Some are looking for the words tallow, some are not, some will see the words olive oil. They want remember the few comments that state where it is located in the list of ingredients, they will just remember the comments that associate olive oil with bad lather. I know of at least 4 different times I have talked with other members on this board who wanted to know about QCS Vostok. When they went to the site they read olive oil in the ingredient list and that just stopped their purchase cold. I ended up having to send them each nice size samples to convince them that olive oil in the ingredients list is not a lather killer (in the list I did not say where in the list). It made me realize that their are probably quite a few that have passed on some great soaps and creams from QCS just because the words olive oil appear in the ingredients. I really wanting to impress upon those reading this that yeah olive oil listed first has a high probability that it will perform just as brucered, Kevan, jazzguy, strop, said. Remember it is where the word olive oil is placed in the ingredients, and not that olive oil is listed in the ingredients.

Absolutely! I probably should have stressed this more. In fact, now that summer is here, Vostok will be my next victim for the 3017 treatment.

Whoo! Strop and other members please don't take may thread as a negative response back at any of you. I read now and yikes! Not my intentions one bit as I have a great amount of respect for those that posted their responses and do agree with what you were stating. Sorry guys!!!!

No offense given and absolutely none taken!:001_smile This is a very important point. The simple presence of the olive oil doesn't mean anything, just that it may not be good for shaving if it is the primary source of "fat".

I tried Thistle Ridge about 2 years ago and also had the lather disappear in no time. It was not a good shave soap IMO.

Their bar soaps are decent though and I use them for pre-shave prep.
