Anyone ever dull a blade before done shaving?

This used to happen to me all the time with the cartridge shaver. Tonight it happened with a Merkur Super Rostfrei. When it was cartridges, I would finish with the dull one anyway due to price, obviously. This time, I finished with the dull DE blade because I'm running low on the only blade I have that seems to always work for me: Feather Hi-Stainless. (Hmm Hi-Stainless is the absolute perfect Engrish transration for Super Rostfrei) [ Naturally no offence to any Japanese speakers intended. I have a great respect for the language. I also have a lot of good clean fun with Engrish! ]

So, five passes and no hairs getting cut past the middle of the second pass. Just yanked on, not cut. Smeggin' 'ell. Now I'm prickly and raw at the same time:cursing:

I guess now I have a reason to really dislike the Merkurs. Shame, I have a lot of those left..!

The only time I stopped a shave right in the middle was with a Dorco blade in a blue tip. WTG went... well, not great, but there was no blood. First XTG and it was like riding a hardtail harley down a washboard dirt road.

I shave in the shower. I was soaked and half covered in shave soap and god knows what else. Didn't care. Left a sudsy swamp in my wake to toss that Dorco and put the blue tip away. :cursing:

I once put a new blade on a vintage sharpener to strop it, only to replace it after the first pull. Ouch.

Sorry, buddy, I don't mean to laugh, but somehow that just struck me  maybe it's because it seems like something that would happen to me

I have to translate that. I do appreciate what you mean, I was born in the right city and I have Harley in my blood, but I have never driven a motorcycle.

"It was like riding a 7" lifted Jeep down a washboard paved road."

Yep, that's what the 2nd half of the 2nd pass with this Merkur was like! Doh! My face hurts too much to laugh..

I once tried a sample Treet DE blade. One side was sharp. One side was dull. The good side was good enough to finish the shave on its own, but I didn't try for a 2nd shave with it.

I have to wonder if I caused the Merkur to fail. I've used probably three of these blades already (probably should be keeping track of this) with no issues. The previous night, I discarded the Feather that I had used three times, because I've been not going longer than 3 just to rule out blades dulling as a problem. I took the Feather out after shaving, cleaned and dried the razor, and took a new Merkur out of the wax paper and installed it in the razor, and put the razor back in the drawer. As I was doing this, I thought it probably isn't the best thing to do. It's probably better to let the razor dry on its own and install a new blade when I'm ready to use it.

Merkur makes top notch razors but lousy blades. :confused1
It's one of the great mysteries of shaving.

Yes i concur, the only Merkur blade i have tried was the sample blade that came with my progress and it was poor, i tossed it straight away and went back to my feathers.

I have never dulled one during the first shave but I have experienced defective blades that don't do the job. I throw them out without hesitation. Can happen with any blade. Usually the rest of the pack is just fine.
