OP here. OK I tried the upside down towel method and it seems to work OK. Not sure I'm doing it as described earlier, but I put the base plate upside down on a towel, push down on blade, and pull up on plate. This does dislodge the blade with minimal risk.
Some blades are more cooperative than others. Polsilvers are like glued on -- really, really hard to disengage from the GC base plate.
