What's new

Any other single use blade guys ?

Anyone else use a fresh blade at every shave?

I'm not starting a single use vs multi use thread.

Just gathering consensus.

I just started that practice, a very fresh feeling. But, from what I just read some blades get better after the first shave so who knows. Whatever works for you I guess, I must try the Astra blades.

and holy crap there is another person!!! i feel like i've found my long lost brother!

i've used a New Blade Every Shave since my first week of DE shaving. I just can't wrap my head around the 2nd or 3rd shave with the same blade being better than the 1st. and yes i've tried it

I use a blade until it feels dull and then I toss it. Sometimes it's one shave, some times it's five.

I don't care how inexpensive the blades are, I just can't wrap my mind around throwing away something that still has plenty of quality, useable life left in it.

The only blade I didn't throw awa y when it sucked was this current Trig blade I'm using.
Shave 1 was awful, full of tugs and got some nicks. Shave 2 was the same, but today on shave 3 I used the trig with really crappy overly wet lather from some cheap VDH soap and got a fantastic, comfortable shave that was BBS.

(this is the only blade I've ever used that "improved" over time)
Usually if it feels bad I just toss it.

I only toss a blade after one shave if it's a dud. I find the second shave is often better than the first. I rarely push a blade past three or four shaves.

I too can't grasp the idea of a blade getting sharper or better after usage. I mean I guess if I presented to me I would say there is a small chance its true but then why wouldn't manufacturers do that to begin with to achieve maximum sharpness? After all it is a fair competition market not a monopoly. Yes I do realize that manufacturers don't go all the way to make thier products the best. They find an equilibrium between good product and making the heftiest profit.

We all know for a fact that blades are the sharpest when unused. Some speculate that a some blades from some brands sharpen with usage which is well and good but I don't have the patience to test that or wait for it.

So if that particular blade isn't as sharp from the pack its in. Then so be it. I doubt that a company like Feather (blade brand I use) has a wide margin for "Acceptable defective units rate".

bro!!!

No one said the blade became sharper after the first shave. I agree that would be impossible and makes no sense. Speaking for myself, I have had some blades that shaved better after the first shave. But its never sharper. Its smoother, and more comfortable. I too cannot wrap my mind around throwing away a blade that still has several excellent shaves left in it. I use a blade until it no longer shaves smoothly.

I normally use a blade 3 times and then toss. I have thrown some away after 1 shave, and it's been because the blade was terrible for some reason. I recently did this with a Walmart Wilkinson Sword which I assume was just a bade blade in the batch.

I must agree with Mr. Hope, If I could find one of those old razor blade re-sharpeners I would use that to, If it worked.
Because I'm going to save money DE shaving!

The quality of the shave isn't all about sharpness. I'd think that Feathers, especially, benefit from the slight "stropping" on the edge grind area that skin causes, smoothing the blade for the second shave. As the blade itself is very sharp, the sharpness shall stay acceptable for 2-3 shaves, at least.

I have yet to test corking the Feathers - however, similar effect is achieved by just shaving once.

Thus, the fresh blade doesn't - even in theory - always guarantee the best shave.

Not sharper, smoother. Definitely true of Feathers for me. If there's a decline in sharpness on the second shave, it's negligible -- but the blade is certainly less rough.

Until recently I varied the number of shaves by type of blade... Derbys 1 shave, Personna 2 shaves, Astra SP 3 shaves. Then I realized that I am going to be DE shaving for good and started buying blades in 100s rather than 5s or 10s.

Now... One blade, One shave.

I'm getting to that point. Lately, it's two shaves and toss. I don't find my Feather blades improve on the second shave. Since I love that "fresh blade" feeling, I may soon be ready to join the "one shave and toss" club.
