Any other cologne that smells like Truefitt & Hill Grafton but is a little more affordable?

To my uintrained nose TOBS Mr. Taylor is similar. Both are clean, barbershop scents, but while the Grafton smells clean and "dry", Mr. Taylor smells clean and "wet". I own and love both. :biggrin:

Mr Taylor description from classicshaving;
Mr Taylor Collection
For generations, discriminating gentlemen have selected this crisp and spicy fragrance in which Tarragon, Lavender and Incense combine with hints of Green Galbanum and Citrus for an elegant manly scent and a warm, woody drydown with traces of Cedar, Sandal, Patchouli and Musk.

Grafton notes from basenotes;
* Top Notes
* Citrus, Lemon, Galbanum.
*

Middle Notes
* Tarragon, Lavender.
*

Base Notes
* Incense.

There are a lot of the same notes. The Tobs is usually around $31.00 without shipping, but if you look around a bit it can be had cheaper with sales or coupons.

Similar-ish is Adidas's Sport Field. Grafton is heavier and more leathery than Sport Field; the latter is more citrussy, fresher and sweeter. It's not a bad scent an sich, but you will notice the differences very easily. Still, Sport Field costs 1/6th of Grafton, though :).

BigBubba,

Thanks for the suggestions and I'm glad you own both as I can ask you questions now :)

How long does the smell last for both Mr. Taylor and T&H? Does one last longer than the other?

Does one smell stronger than the other? I don't like overpowering scents that make everyone in the room look at you, just a clean, discrete scent for the people (I mean ladies) you allow close to you :)

Personally I think that the longevity and projection of both are about the same. Neither are overpowering if you don't over-apply. They both last 8+ hours on my skin, but as always YMMV.

Keep in mind that the Mr. Taylor comes in a splash bottle. I popped the stopper out and have been pouring it into a small spray decant to use.
You can get a spray attachment from TOBS for £6.95 if you email them, but then you're getting close to the cost of Grafton if you use the B&B discount.

Discount? What Discount? Where have I been? Someone, please tell me about this!

Its BB09 I believe.

I bought my Grafton from an ebay seller in the UK. Including shipping, the price was around $45. I think thats pretty darn good.

I like Grafton quite a lot and own a decant of Mr. Taylor. While I like the latter, I think it's quite a bit milder, much more understated. I think Grafton is quite bold. I prefer it, but I only wear it when I'm in the mood for something a bit strong.

You might want to consider ordering the pack of cologne samples from T&H off their website (you can also get shaving cream samples).

I got to sample all the scents at a local store and I know I like Grafton, but I don't like the price :)

You might want to try a sample of Dagger from St Charles Shave, which to my nose has a light, sweetened fougere scent. The products are very inexpnesive which belies their quality. Check it out at http://www.saintcharlesshave.com/edt.asp

The other fougere-like scent that I loved since it was introduced over 40 years ago is Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene which can be found now at Target, Marshall's, etc. It does not really smell like Grafton, but you will smell the connection, I think.

Good nose to catch the overlap of Grey Flannel and Grafton. I had not thought of that myself, but I think you are very correct on this.

I like Grafton a lot, but you are also correct we are really talking fougere here, and there are lots of fougeres out there of all different prices. I would endorse anything SCS makes as true to what it says it is and a bargain.

Good evening gentlemen. I have to thank you for the information in this thread. I just received my bottle of TOOBS Mr. Taylor last week. It was the aftershave version. Upon application I immediately remarked to myself that it smelled like a T&H scent I had tried once. Somewhere in my foggy mind I thought; Grafton. And then promptly forgot about it. I had used a tube of the shave cream and of course the scent almost always varies from the edt version. So this makes me a bit happy that I was able to awaken some long held memory of the scent. I am normally not the greatest with scent families or identifying individual notes. Yet I knew I had smelled something very like Mr. Taylor before. For what it is worth, I prefer the Taylor offering. Simply because it is a bit warmer than the Grafton to my nose. As someone here said, Grafton is clean and dry, and Mr. Taylor is clean and wet. I would also add that on my skin, Mr. Taylor projects its incense base a lot faster than Grafton and it stays for quite awhile. Albeit in the background. Mr. Taylor is a fantastic bargain in the price department and its traditional accord. It is "modern" without seeming so. To me, Grafton smells much more modern. That would make the difference between the dry and wet comments. This is not criticism. Grafton is better by a LONG mile than 90% of the department store crap I have smelled. It is just not my preference. Good information gents. Thanks again. BTW, I cannot note the similarity between Grafton and Grey Flannel. On me, GF wildly projects it violet notes and I was unable to wear it as a young man. I may be tempted to pick up a bottle at TJ Maxx. They have it often at our local branch at very reasonable price.

Regards, Todd

I got a chance today to sniff Grey Flannel. There are 2 versions:

1) Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel Eau De Toilette Spray for Men, dark green bottle. It smells like the VDH Deluxe shaving soap. Nothing close to Grafton. So if you like VDH soap, this may be good to finish your shave with.

2) Eau De Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene, light blue/green liquid in a transparent bottle. This smells nothing like Grafton or VDH for that matter. Smells very common.

Personally I'm not interested in either of these.

Forget Eau de GF. You pretty much nail it. Nothing special.

Re GF EDT, SC Gardener said "It does not really smell like Grafton, but you will smell the connection, I think." I would agree that it is "nothing close to Grafton," but I am sitting here with Grafton on one arm and GF on the other and I think I "smell the connection." Grafton has this very nice, balanced, very Brit, citrus and lavender with oakmoss or whatever earthiness underneath (basenotes says "incense" as the base; seems earthier than incense to me). GF has near explosive violet with some sharp citrus or something in the top over some sturdy earthy base. Not close really, but I sure smell the connection. I think we are smelling two different, but truly wonderful, interpretations of fougere--with GF substituting violet fro the classic fougere lavender. I pretty much agree with Luca Turin that GF is a masterpiece. But I am not certain I could wear it today, at least not unless I was being "ironic." Grafton, to me, if one of the very best all around edts out there. Different enough to be appealing. Good in virtually every season, from boardroom to skateboard.

I'm a big fan of Grafton and while I see some connection to GF, Grafton seems much better balanced and refined. To my nose there was something a little stinky about GF.

Can't disagree, except maybe on "much better balanced." I think GF is balanced. It is just balancing much heavier elements, but I know exactly what you mean. GF is a very bold fragrance. Like Luca Turn said, it can seem "crude." It is amazing to me that it became as popular as it did given how different it is from what went before and given that it is unquestionably "stinky."

But lots of scents I think are "great" are stinky. K 10 surely is. But to me 88 has a wonderfully stinky opening note. Very rotten, very over ripe. Very hard to duplicate, without having it be utterly repulsive and dominating. Pen's BB to some folks reeks unpleasently of Pinesol and lemon. I happen to love it! Folks have similar reactions to Pen's HB. C&S Citrus Paradis must strike some people that way. Perhaps all of the Carons do.

But your senses are not at all incorrect!

I love K 10 and 88 and in general, don't have problem with strong scents (just don't like anything very sweet). Maybe I'll have to fork over the $5.99 and give GF another try!
