Any knock'offs you enjoy more than the original?

A few months ago I acquired a bottle of Family Dollar Brut. At first it smelled just like the original to my nose, but after using it a few times, I picked up on the differences.

I fell in love with the stuff! Like alot more than the original.

Any of you guys prefer the knock'offs over the real deal?

Not sure I prefer it over the original but the ViJohn copy of Skin Bracer is really quite good. It's sold under quite a few house brands, but is also sold as Barbasol Brisk (at Dollar General). ViJohn makes Skin Bracer for Colgate, so it should be no surprise that their clone is of great quality; it's easy to make a good clone, when you have the super secret recipe for the original!!

Also, quite a few people think the ViJohn Old Spice clone (acquired most cheaply as Family Dollar's version of Old Spice) smells closer to the original Shulton Old Spice, than the current Proctor and Gamble version.

The Aqua Velva clones I have tried (included the one made by ViJohn) are not worth bothering with, as they have a very low level of menthol; the large amount of menthol is one of Aqua Velva's biggest selling points.

Barbasol Pacific Rush is not a knock'off as far as I know, but at $1.79 it's a great deal. You can find at Dollar General, along with Barbasol Brisk, and a ViJon Brut knock'off. May want to grab a pack of 5 Korean blades (Dorco) for one Dollar while you are there.

I like the ViJohn Old Spice clone better than the P&G version. Haven't tried the others mentioned.

I've heard Vijon Skin Bracer ("Brisk") is just like vintage Skin Bracer...is this true? I am nineteen so it'd be hard for me to tell.

I don't think there has been any change in formulation to Skin Bracer. My current production bottle smells just like my bottle from the 1970's. But yes the Vijon Brisk is a pretty much spot on match to the smell of Skin Bracer.

I like Vijon's better for some reason. It might be just me, but the clone seems a tad bit brighter. The Skin Bracer branded one seems to have much more vanilla in it, to me.

Is Skin Bracer really that expensive that we need to be looking at clones?

I actually despize the scent of Barbasol Brisk, while I find it very similar to Skin Bracer, but something about it is way too strong for my nose. I'll stick with the original. I need to go buy a few bottles of it to fill up a vintage 12oz bottle I recently picked up: The Construction worker.

Brisk smells better to me, actually. And I bought it because no one around had Skin Bracer at the time, but I prefer it. Lots of people say the same about Old Spice, but $8 at Walmart for a small bottle of aftershave is a little iffy for me since I don't use it all of the time. A case where it may be cheap, but I want cheaper.

Picked up a bottle of what was labeled Cool Ocean cologne at odd lots for $5.

Not sure if it is branded or a knock off as I have not heard of this before.

The scent is nice, sort of similar to Drakkar Noir.

Funny thing. When I pulled it out of the box, the bottle had no label on it (just glass with an atomizer and lid)

This thread is making me curious about the Family Dollar Old Spice knock-off. I'm going to have to try it. My last bottle of OS was my favorite. Not sure where my wife got it, but it smelled much better than my current bottle. So I'll see if the Vijon brand is more to my liking. Thanks for the great info here.

Klos, I have a bottle of it, and I also got to smell the new stuff. The newer stuff has a citrus note I don't smell in the Vijon, that one is spicier. It doesn't last long on me, though. It's nice, but will be better for winter I think. It's a good deal, though.

I went to Family Dollar today and the shelf for the Ivy Club spice was empty. Must be popular! I smelled the Brut knock-off and it actually smelled nice, and by that I mean better than Brut. I think I'll pick up one of each as soon as the Old Spice knock-off is back in stock. At less than $2 per bottle you can't beat it!

I've been using the Old Spice clone from Family Dollar during the week for the past couple of months and an old bottle of real Old Spice on the weekends. I really don't notice the difference.

Prior to that I've used Brut and the clone from Dollar General. Again, it makes no difference to me.

On these already inexpensive aftershaves, I'm going with the knock offs because they are even cheaper. If I were headed out in the evening I tend to avoid them and go with the brand name stuff, but those are more expensive products than Brut and Old Spice and I suspect less likely to be duplicated on the cheap.

Turtle,

It is almost certainly a knockoff of Cool Water by Davidoff.

+1, I like the Family Dollar Classic knockoff of Brut better than Brut. And you can't go wrong with the Ivy Club for the price!
