Bought the greasy monstrosities but don't know what they are i think the one in the box is a synthetic razor hone and it may have been coated before i degreased it, but you know.... thems the breaks!
That crossed my mind on the one in the box, but the other has saw marks and veins of something in it. I think it's a natural stone. It looks rough but it's almost smooth as the one in the box.Look like India stones to me. Synth for tools and knives mostly
No it's 2 different stones. Is it the same one in the pic out of the box with the square sides/corners? If so, it looks like an India stone to me. But that only pictures, internet, and a guy’s (me) opinion. So that’s never perfect for ID. But it looks India to me and looks like it lived in a box for a long time too as indicated by that caked up oil line down the side.
If I’m wrong it maybe what folks call a washita (ark) here. Soak in simple green degreaser for a few days and you will know for sure.
Good luck
The line on the side("vein" or "saw mark") its an inclusion and its like 1/8" deep.
The small molted one is a vintage smith's hard ark(I've never seen one like it, sg 2.58). It's my finisher, i like it over this one.I'd say the large dished stone is likely a Washita. The small mottled stone looks like a soft ark. The uniform orange stone in the box is an India stone.
I would have never picked it for hard from the looks but after checking sg and trying to finish on it I'd peg it for hard(as it's labeled). I always thought washitas were lighter cream or white with pepper. The finished one feels really fine. It's dense, smooth and heavy and it clinked like a translucent. So weird. Definitely beyond my expertise. The one you called a hard ark looks like an old smiths washita to me. Glad you are enjoying them
