Any current experience Duke 3 in Best vs. Commodore X3 in Best?

I have a Commodore X3 in Best, and an unslaked case of SBAD. I bought the Commodore because it had a knot the same size (within a millimeter) as the Duke, and both were in "Best". I also know the Commodores in the past were roundly dinged, and the new one seems to be a huge improvement. But does anyone have any current experience with both "head to head"?

Where might I find information on problems with the older Commodores? Were they singularly a problem as a Simpson model as opposed to other Simpsons?

Did quite a bit of searching for Commodore info on several sites a couple months ago, and do not recall anything negative being said about them. In fact, don't recall finding much of anything said about them.

or this one: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=30456&highlight=commodore+duke

and these two allude to the difference between the old and the newer Commodore: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=94934&highlight=commodore+duke

Has anyone got first-hand experience with the NEW Commodore X3 and the Duke 3 (both in Best)? Don't make me buy one just to find out... not that I won't if I have to...

Zumkopf, thank you for those post links. I surmised that the older Commodores with the alleged "not best" best were all Somerset. I believe Vulfix has been using their current line of excellent best hair in the Commodores now. I own an X1, and no Dukes, so I can't help you in your comparison. If you don't get any responses, you might try e-mailing the fellow that made that Shaving101 review. He said he was going to try a Duke 2 or Duke 3 next. Maybe he did, and can share some insight. Good luck.

I too am very interested in this comparison. I just purchased the Duke 3 in Best. I'm in the midst of the break in period and will report my impressions in a separate thread. I also have the Colonel X2L, which had no break in period. I reviewed the threads above and it is a very curious thing that the feel of Simpson's "Best" varies from brush to brush. I don't want to say the quality varies, though this may be the case. I look forward to seeing this thread progress.

Well, I pulled them both from the cabinet after reading your post, and save for the Commodore's sitting a little lower in the saddle, I could make out no discernible difference between them. Both are Somersets: hardy, reliable artifacts of English artisanship.

David, thank you for doing the comparison. Now the challenge is to find a head to head comparison with the two from The Isle of Man.

I suppose I could send you my Commodore, and you could send me your Duke, and we'd get a two-opinion test that way. Only you might never see your Duke again

But I may end up doing the comparison myself anyway. The big Kents and Rooneys are just too big for my face; every time I use one (without an O-ring, anyway) I feel like I'm slathering my face with a 6" housepainting brush. I am seriously considering selling one or two to finance a Duke or Polo. Or a Duke *and* a Polo. "SBAD, come again no more..."
