Any 36-Hour Shavers Out There?

Normally shaving from day-to-day, on a 24-hour cycle, I've noticed that some of my best shaves have occurred after a waiting a few hours more, or 36 hours later. Can't really explain it. Maybe it has to do with my shaves being closer as a rule, leaving less to shave after 24 hours, or the whiskers being longer after 36 hours, sort of like a false HHT reading with a longer strand of hair. Or maybe it's just giving my skin a little bit more time to recover.

Anyone shaving on a 36-hour (or longer basis) for this reason?

I don't shave according to any set schedule, but I (and many others) have noticed that the best shaves come when one let's the whiskers grow a little longer.

There's been a lot of debate as to the reason(s) for this. Whether the longer whiskers work better with the razor's geometry, or if the skin has more time to recover, or the phase of the moon is in a better position, or whatever.

Don't try an analyze it too much. If a 36-hour schedule works for you, Go For It.

Thanks for your response and confirmation. Analysis seems to be my method, though, leading to my observing that 36 hours might be better than 24 hours in the first place. Anyone else care to chime in here?

I have often thought 36 hours would be about right for me, but that would mean alternating morning and evening shaves. I like leisurely shaves, and I have discovered that I am just not going to get up early enough in the morning for a proper shave. I do occasionally wait 36 hours over the weekend and it's always great.

I don't time it - but on Friday into Saturdays I go about that long or longer - up to 48 hr.
Those shaves are always better than the typical 24 cycle type.

I usually shave at night, so friday night I sometimes skip the shave til sat am, sunday am and monday pm. Those 36 hour shaves are great. I would agree with you. I get an itchy neck any longer than the 36 hours though so i cant handle 2 days off without shaving.

Usually shave every morning, except weekend. Then, I often find myself missing then morning shave, life takes over and suddenly it's night time. Knowing I have early Mass on Sunday puts the shave late Sat night, then back to the daily shave on Monday. Works well for me not because of the hair length, but just the timing.

Right now it's not required that I stay clean shaven so I do so only a couple times a week. Shaving like this it seems the shaves are above what a normal day to day shave is.

If I shave ATG, another ATG shave within 36 hours usually stinks. Since I have to shave every 24 hours, I rotate thusly

  • Day 1 - WTG, XTG and ATG
  • Day 2 WTG, XTG
  • Day 3 - Repeat day 1
  • Day 4 - Repeat day 2

This (or some variation) may be the perfect way to do it if a full, three-pass shave every 24 hours is a little too much for your face. Great idea!

Guess I should qualify things by saying that I mostly do WTG and XTG. ATG is reserved for the base of the neck and beneath the jawline--on the second pass, and then again, on the third, if needed.

I typically shave every other day (48-hr), but I do the full "3-pass with touch-up" gameplan. I tried to shaving everyday but my skin definitely does not agree. I tried WTG only, and that wasn't enough - my skin needs the extra time to heal.

Sometimes I shave at night, sometimes the morning. Depending on kids and wife's schedule. I'd probably say that I do the 18 hour thing a few times a week and noticed a slightly better shave.

I think you may be on to something with the 36 hours. 36-48 feels great to me, but recently I went 5 days and that shave was not as nice. Every 24 is OK, but every other day feels better.
