"Antiquing" advice

Gentlemen, I've very recently convinced SWMBO that a trip to the local antique stores could be a fun afternoon. As a result, I need some tips on picking out worthwhile "cool things." Any DE's I should look for, fountain pens, etc.

Also, when inspecting these items (especially fountain pens) besides obvious problems with the items is there any thing a novice should look for but wouldn't know enough to see?

I appreciate it!

I pick up most any razor that is in good shape that has a good price. You can usually tell how well it will clean up. Cased and/or boxed razors are good to grab as well. With fountain pens, I look at the nib to make sure it isn't jacked up and I take it apart to check the inside condition and finally check the outside for any cracks. I usually stick to Parker and Shaeffer fountain pens.

I haven't found any of the highly coveted razors yet such as Aristocrats, Toggles, or Presidents, but I keep on trying.

Buy 'em all, let B/S/T sort 'em out. :tongue_sm

Personally, I reckon you can buy anything you wouldn't mind owning for any amount you wouldn't mind paying should it prove to be a dud or somehow misrepresented. These are toys, not retirement plans.

Follow that advice, If you start trying to find something that you think might be worth a lot, do some serious research, unless it's like dirt cheap (i.e. under $5)

Don't forget that the "price" is usually just a starting point. I get a bigger kick from haggling over the price than I do from buying.

Most important advice is to not believe anything the seller may have on the price tag that describes the item. I've seen some insane descriptions of items on razors, straights, and brushes. I travel all over the country on business and hit a few shops while Im there and have come across some awesome scores.

I would lurk around the bst to look at razors and see what the pattern of pricing is, also check the wiki for dates on Gillettes.

Going back to finds of insane vendors reminds me of a straight being "blue" in the description but it was actually burned so blue it lost its temper. I ran across another straight last week in San Jose, CA that said it was genuine mother of pearl but it was actually a faux tortoise, price tag..$150!!!

Then I also found a Crown & Sword, Silver Ring, Friodor and J. Allen & Sons with a stamp that I've never seen and can't find anyone who knows why the stamp is different.

I prefer hitting antique malls. You have a variety of sellers, which gives you a better pool of items and a better chance of finding what you are looking for. Thankfully, my wife likes all things retro as do I, and it has become a great way for a us to spend the day together. :001_wub:
