Antique Store Find - Help Identify Please

Hello. I was in the thick of Eden, NC yesterday with the in-laws and stopped by an antique store. I found these two razors (total $8). I spent this morning cleaning them up. I am new to the fact that I do need help identifying them. Any help would be appreciated.

(Sub-question: so my wife and I saw a fair amount of scuttles and mustache mugs. She asked why were they so floral and ornate. I couldn't answer that one either.)

Cheers

The silver one is a Gillette Slim Adjustable and the gold one is Gillette Short Comb New. $8 for both is a fantastic deal as they are both good shavers. Enjoy!

Looks like a couple of great finds, I am no expert on these things but it looks like you may have a Gillette Slim adjustable and a Gillette NEW type.

If that slim works as good as it looks - it would easily go for 25 or more on ebay.
The NEW, about 8 bucks, so you got a free Slim!

Good deal!

Thank you. I have been searching around the shavewiki for questions. I just have a tech (that I love) and was just pif'd a SE pushbutton Gem. Can someone give me the lowdown on the use of the adjustable. Again. Thanks for the help.

Just pop in a blade, set the number from 1 (mild) to 9 (more aggressive) and turn the base to close the doors.
Dont forget an extra 1/4 turn at the end.
If you need to adjust the numbers mid-shave, loosen the doors first else you risk damaging the mechanism.
Enjoy the shaves!

Wcoppage:

Great score. You did very well, my friend.

The Gillette Slim is a very well respected razor and the favorite of many members of B&B. I would suggest you start at a setting of 3 or 4. Make sure you release the pressure on the twist to open (TTO) knob on the bottom of the razor any time you make an adjustment. Tighten the TTO knob on the razor (including the last 1/4 turn) and shave away. Go slow, no pressure and let the weight of the razor do the work. Try and use a blade you have previously used as a bench mark to reduce the variables. You should have no trouble at all using this razor as long as you don't adjust it for every pass you make. Some of our members with barbed wire-like beards dial it all the way up to 9. A setting of 4 with 4 passes works exceptionally well for me.

Good luck, great score and please let us know how it works for you. Enjoy your shaves.

When plumbing was still being developed, the toilet was just an outhouse, and there might be only one water spout inside, with a pump handle to stroke to fill the various other water distribution devices. The wash basin stood atop a special piece of furniture, the wash stand, out in the open, with a large bowl and pitcher on top. Those would be decorated, as would larger shaving objects that were also left out with the primary ceramics.

To add to this, then as now, most often the lady of the house did the decorating. Most wash basins looked something like this:

Look on the underside of the head on the Slim there should be a small letter on one side and a number on the other that will give you the the year (letter) and quarter of the year (number) that the razor was made.
Letters start with W in 1951,reset to A in 1955 then go up by year alphabetically (except Q to prevent confusion with O)to yet another restart with A in 1980.
Looks like all the plating is gone on the head of that NEW but give it a good polish and you've got a wicked cool steampunk DE razor.

we were back at the wife's folks this weekend and I had a great haul. $30 for the lot plus the aftershave. They are soaking right now. All look in good shape

Nice haul.
Looks to be a late 60's/70's Super Speed flair tip,a late 40's to 1953(save for 52) Super Speed, a couple of Gem SE razors(including one cased),a ball handle Tech and what looks to be an Old Type open comb.
Hard to say on the Old Type but the photo makes the ball handle look too new to be original might be an Old Type/ball handle Tech hybrid but still a damn good shaver.
Now those are some Skin Bracers I'd like to try, very nice find.

Slims are one of the best TTO Gillette ever made, and its Adjustable also, your going to love the smoothness of that slim.
