Antique Shop Hunting

I have been dreaming for the last week of visiting an Antique mall and a couple of antique shops just south of Los Angeles. I had visions of finding razors new in the box that the proprietors of the shop would give me for a song.

Finally, I got my chance. I searched high and low and came back with nothing. I didn't se a single razor. Towards the end I was at least hoping to see at least a Tech! I finally asked one of the shop owners. She said that for some reason old razors had become popular. Go figure! :glare:

One of the largest antique malls in the country is in Springfield, Ohio. I was in it a couple months ago they said the same thing. They had a bunch of straights and a few off-brand DE's, but no Gillettes and no Schicks.

On the other hand, employees really don't know the inventory of these places (rather sad, really). So there might have been a few around, but it was so frigging huge, no one could find one!

It's usually better going to smaller antique shops in smaller places to be able to find the really good deals. Even then, it's just luck.

I have found most of my vintage razors all in the same shop. It is a really small antique store run by just one guy. I said in the past month he hasn't been able to keep any in stock.

I've definitely had my luck in smaller shops in smaller towns, seems that razors go fast in big towns, but you can still luck out! Just gotta keep hunting and your bound to find something.

I agree.

My absolute best finds have been off the radar small town shops. Literally not on Google maps. :)

If it's anywhere near a large/medium city and it's on google maps under "antiques" you can almost guarantee it gets picked through for razors regularly. Which also leads to higher prices when they do come in!

You need to go out to antique shops in the middle of nowhere. The ones in or close to bigger cities are cleaned out.

Yeah, HEAVY on the luck. I was out yesterday to a new shop in a small town. Not much shave wise. They had an Ever-ready SE in poor condition and what they had tagged as a 1940 French Aristocrat. It was a 1951-1952 black tip SuperSpeed and plainly said "made in USA" on the bottom. They wanted $40.00. Oh, HA, HA, HA. :scared: :thumbdown

I found a straight that I wanted in a decent sized antique mall last week listed at $24. I told them that I was going to be back over the weekend to pick it up (didn't have the funds on-hand at the time). When I went back in over the weekend they jacked the price up almost triple! Since I haven't used a straight before, I decided to pass on it.

Got a couple of Gillettes at the flea market. I think these (called swap meets, also) might be your better source. Look at the "stuff&junk" vendors, guys with a little of everything and nothing fancy or "collectible". What they do is buy up what's left at yard sales, which will often include older razors. And of course hit yard sales themselves

Some of them may have an idea of price/value, but most got their stock for next to nothing and mainly want to move it as fast as possible. Don't be embarassed to make really lowball offers, especially on "users" with no packaging, cases, accessories.

Haha.. Found 3 vintage Old Spice mugs in a shop Saturday... My A/D created a slight hole in my wallet. I bought the cheapest one and hid the other 2 till I return.... Not sayin which shop or where...lol

I'm lucky enough to live near an antiques mall that is in the middle of nowhere. Even then, sometimes I score big while other times I strike out. So, even then, it's hit or miss.
