What's new

Another JR&S identification thread...

So I have been off the forum for a while, but I have been pretty active in the shaving world. Today I received a package with a couple of Joseph Rodgers & Sons shavers in it. I pretty much bought them sight unseen thinking I could spend some extra time on them as I’ve never purchased a JR&S before. What I got left me really confused. One is definitely a newer shaver, has the half moon England on it and looks the period. The other I was told would take some time to clean up. But when I got it it just had a few spots of oxidation that came right out with about 1 minute of Flitz. Everything I’ve researched says it should be a pre-1840 because it doesn’t have the half moon “England” and it just doesn’t seem like it. Maybe a turn of the century regrind? Take a look and let me know if anyone has some input. Also I louped the bevel and spine and it doesn’t look like it’s ever been honed.

The requirement for country designation was some time in early 1890s. Not uncommon to find nice ones before this. Looks like a nice razor. If it was reground it looks like a nice job in the pics.

How close is the toe to the wedge when closed? I can’t tell from the pic. Might have been shortened for a broken toe.

The toe is a half inch from the pin. You can see the wedge is gone. The toe at the spine looks like it is a factory grind though.
