Another "complicated" shave...

Well, I gave it a go again. A while back I stuck to my guns for about three solid weeks, and maybe my razor was not all that sharp, but I could not get anything resembling a close shave either with or without blood. I understand that there is a huge learning curve, and I should keep my expectations low. But I would have thought I would see some improvement after three solid weeks. Either way I did not.

Fast forward maybe two months after that. Tonight I get out the razor, give it a go. Slice. Corner of the lip. Man, this sucks. Funny thing is though I am cut, I am not quitting. Gonna send my razor out for a real honing and give it a go again. Concentrate on my form stropping cause maybe that is part of my problem too. I do not press too hard, and I do not nick the strop. Who knows.

Well, I just started using a straight myself so take my advice with a grain of salt I suppose, but I wouldn't buy a straight razor second-hand (Ebay, a forum or whatever) without sending it out to be honed. Especially if you're starting out, you want to be sure that everything is in order so you know for sure whether it's for you or not.

Anyway, since you're sending it to be honed professionally, you'll know for sure soon. Let us know how it goes.

If the straight razor is not shave ready, regardless of who sold it, it won't give you good results. Having a honemeister looking at it is the best thing to do at this stage.
