What's new

An observation on DE to SE then back to DE

Prior to trying out the GEM PB I had kicking around I'd been shaving with a Schick Krona for quite awhile. I liked it, the shave was superior to any cartridge multi-blade or disposable I'd ever tried. Then I tried the SE for the first time with CVS carbons, "Wow!" was my reaction. Next I tried a GEM MM and subjectively believe I got an incrementally better shave than the PB but it took longer and the PB is seems a bit easier for me to wield. I've had barely a week with the two of these but have been very pleased out how great they work, no clear winner with either. I believe that is a testament to fundamentally good design.

And then.....today switched back to the Krona as it was in the shower, where I shave, and the GEM's were over by the sink. The Krona had a new blade in it so I used it and was very surprised at the result. I ended up with a much better shave than I can ever recall getting from it. I would also be hard pressed to state with absolute certainty that the SE shaves I've managed were absolutely better overall than the DE. There are definitely areas however, under my nose for example, where the SE works better in one pass than the DE. So what is going on? I believe during my short stint with the SE's, I actually improved my technique dramatically while I learned to use them. I also do not believe I would have had a good experience with SE's at all had I not had the long trial with my DE first. However, I never thought that hard about what I was actually doing with it. Quite the contrary with the SE, I had to think about it, it was deliberate and in turn I actually got better overall.

That's my theory anyway.

Comments?

It's typical for me to become more aware of subtle differences in the technique I'm using when I switch razors or even non shaving related items and it seems to help me raise the bar higher and get better at whatever it is I'm doing.

Having said that, don't deceive yourself:Single edge is the ultimate shaving experience, there is nothing better !

The only time I pay attention any more is if it feels like the razor is going to bite. Then I stop daydreaming and focus once again.

I jump back and forth daily between DE/SE/injectors. All seem to perform exceptional well for me.

+1. The Krona BTW is a notoriously mild shaving razor. I actually PIF'ed the only one I had because it was so mild even loaded with a Feather (as sharp as they come). I think successfully shaving with an SE absolutely improves your technique-- with my face however, I always need a second pass with the SEs and rarely with the more aggressive DEs (my favorite razor is a Red Tip and I like the Slim and Fatboys set to #7).
HOWEVER, I still just like shaving with the SEs because they are so ancient looking (sometimes like paint scrapers and sometimes like victorian medical equipment) and my SEs are my oldest vintage razors. Try a Schick Injector when you get a chance-- the old ones are aggressive and I only own Es and Gs (30's-50's) but I am told that the "newer" ones from say the 60's are milder and there are adjustable versions too. (Few injector models are expensive and the blades, though more expensive than the best DE's are available many places locally and always on Amazon).

I see you are new to B&B this month--- welcome to the club and happy shaving!!!!!

My experience is similar.

As soon as I adjusted my technique to my Gem PB (my only SE back then), it became my favourite razor and used it exclusively for a short while. When I picked up a DE again, my technique appeared to have been improved. Now I go back an forth.

I tried shaving with a straight razor for a while but gave up... for now.
But boy, it did wonders to my technique...
