What's new

An absolutely epic week! I have died and gone to shave heaven [PIC HEAVY]

This last week or so has been just awesome for gear acquisition and creation. Not only have my last two grails arrived within a day of each other, but I finished some of the gear I have been working on. I have been busy with real work so I haven't had much time to play in the garage on the lathe.

Tomorrow is a shaving day. Do I shave with the Darwin Deluxe that arrived today, or the toggle that arrived yesterday (thanks Alex!)??

The brush on the left is just a project I wanted to try. Oak and poplar planks glued and then turned for a unique look I think. 22mm finest inside. The brush on the right is a commission build for a friend at work. She is giving it to her husband for Christmas (I converted them both!:biggrin1: ) Wood is Wenge with a 24mm Silvertip grade A. The three handles are all project builds. The first one on the left is 5000+ year old Irish bog oak. The second is a blue resin stabilized box burl. Last one is african blackwood. I've started gluing lead weights inside the cores of these handles to give them some heft. Quite pleased with the outcomes so far.

Anyways, enjoy the shave porn gents!

Rob, I was happy to help with your holy grail Toggle. I love my Toggies more everyday. We may need to start a Toggie team thread:thumbup:

Rob, your razor handles kick ***. Seriously. Those are very nice.

You're making those from Ball Handle Tech parts, right?

The brushes aren't too shabby either.

Beautiful razors! A Darwin is on my list just for the metal!

I can't even describe it. It truly is the most amazing razor I've ever felt in my hand. It feels just so incredibly well made and the density of the steel is overpowering. I can't wait to shave with it. Just an incredible beauty!

Correct - I bought a junk lot of ratty ball ends and necks a while ago on the bay and had closecut61 replate them in nickel for me. I had to machine down the nubs of them a little bit but the handles have been turning out awesome.

I only have a enough to make 3 or 4 more handles then I'm out :thumbdown

I was actually thinking about fishing on here for anyone's junk parts to make some more. I will post a thread soon on this I think actually. Anyone who donates a neck and ball end can buy a handle at a discount or something. Or they can just give me their otherwise garbage parts for me to resurrect back into the shave pool :)

Beautiful workmanship, Rob! ...... and a great looking collection you have there, including the beauties in the background. :thumbup1:

:yesnod: Well said!!

Shaved with the Darwin this morning! It was a very enjoyable shave. The elegance of the tool in hand was hard to ignore. It is a treat to hold and use.

I was a little apprehensive I think as the head is quite unique. Combine that with me using a 3rd shave polsilver and I got a very comfortable 3 pass DFS. Not as effortless as I would have hoped (imagined in my dreams?) but a good shave nonetheless. I do expect this to improve with both a newer blade and some time spent getting to know this razor.

But the good news is me and the Darwin have nothing but time. It's not going anywhere. Ever.
